Greetings RF professionals,

Im looking into putting a VHF repeater into a third world carribian country. The main concern I have is the weather conditions, and the second issue is land power is on and off and on through out the day. Im also trying to cover 30+ mile radius. I have a 30 foot elevation with a 30 foot tower.

Issues
1. Heat avg temp is 90 degrees and humid
2. Power is intermittant througout the day.

Im leaning toward Amateur radio 2 meter Digital narrow.
(VHF LMR) Digial

I would like to put in digital narrow band

What would be the best Repeater to handle such a
heat and power situation.

Which digital mode? The Motorola Quantar will do APCO P25.

Like most places, countries in the Caribbean have type approval and licensing requirements. It is best to see what gear is already approved and choose the same model to help minimise border issues.

While using ham gear may avoid the type acceptance issue it may then give you more complex licence requirements depending on your own circumstances.

I have arranged type approval in one English and one French state and while straightforward it did require the proper paperwork.

Most western hemisphere government entities place restrictions on message content in the amateur bands. Boiled down to basics, a station operating on amateur frequencies can't be used for any commercial or business purposes. No taxis, ambulances, security, GMRS or FRS either.
If you are planning to construct this amateur VHF repeater facility but you don't yet hold an amateur license issued to you by that "3rd world" country's regulatory authority, the safest method is to donate the equipment to their national or provincial amateur radio society (local equivalent of ARRL) and let those folks handle the political and regulatory battles of importing and installation, as well as the climate.
