Astro Spectra Audio Howl

Fellow techies,

Has anyone ever seen a case where the VOCON module, in an Astro Spectra, causes a full-volume 'howl' in the speaker any time the audio is unmuted? This can be when changing the volume, receiving a signal, whatever... Swapping the VOCON clears the problem, but darned if I can figure out what component on said VOCON has failed.

At first I thought it was the audio PA, breaking into self-oscillation. However, swapping the command board has no effect. It's definitely in the VOCON.

Any ideas?
