APX6500 3 control heads - won't work?

Attempting to run an APX6500 with 3 control heads (for a command bus). Main unit is feeding CH 1 and CH 3, with CH2 daisy-chained off of CH1. Problem: As long as CH3 is connected, you get an EXTRA CH error on all heads. Disconnect it, and the other two are fine. In the CPS, there is only an option for 1 or 2 heads. CPS ver R32; FW ver 30.04. Help?
