OK HT1550 owners:

Is there any way to get the HT1550 voice storage option to automaticly record incoming Call Alerts / Select Calls without having it need to see a break in carrier and send an outgoing message?

I was playing with the "answering machine" mode, and couldn't figure out how to make it just record the message (like a Minitor SV) without going through all the "answering machine" silliness. To add insult to injury, because the radio wants to TX an outgoing greeting prior to recording, it doesn't seem to work at all with Group / Fleet calls, or on RX only modes.

I found the "record all incoming" option, but that's a PITA, not exactly elegant in useage, and can really only be used on modes with "and" signaling squelch.

Obviously someone here has their head someplace where it is well protected from the sun. The question is whether it is Motorola or myself...

I had this working with quick-call on my 1550 a while ago, and it worked rather nicely. The best part was that it recorded 30 seconds worth of people talking, unlike the pagers which have no carrier detect curcits for such nicities... (sp?)

However, I don't have it infront of me... I can't remember the menu steps you need to go through to get there... I have not played with MDC, but I don't see how it could be much different from QCII, except for transmiting an MDC acknoledge packet, if needed.

It is documented in the manual for the portable (which I also have - somewhere).

If you post the menu's your going through it might trigger my memory.

I'm actually rather hoping that it's me. I've found that it is usually much easier to deal with problems caused by my own ignorance than those caused by other people's (Motorola's) stupidity.

I opened up that funny stack of paper in a plastic bag that was lying on top of the radio (I think it's called a manual?) I looked through it, but couldn't find anything useful. One thing that struck me was that I didn't see any reference to the "Answer Mode" function in the manual, and the "AM" icon on the display wasn't even listed in the display section. I hope that this isn't all the result of a firmware "improvement" The radio is shiny new with R05.00.03 firmware. I'm working with the current CPS release.

The menus that I have found that (possibly) affect this are:
Under Utilities there is a "When Available" option that will send a voice message in response to a call alert. I have that disbled.
Under the Voice Storage menu I have:
Playback
Delete
Record
Answer Mode (which includes:)
Ans Mode On
Ans Mode Off
Record Message
Review Message
Silent Mode
Blocking Mode

I also have Answer Mode On/Off assigned to a front panel button.

When "Answer Mode" is off, the radio doesn't record anything. (BTW- I have tried both MDC and QCII in all of my experiments). With "Answer Mode" on, The radio will:
1) Decode the call and alert.
2) When the carrier drops, the radio will TX a beep (I don't have an outgoing voice message stored) and then display "waiting"
3) When carrier resumes, the display changes to "recording" and the message is recorded.

As I mentioned before, I'm trying to get it to record the alerts without trying to TX an outgoing message.

I am looking to do the same thing as the OP here -- basically set my HT1550 up like a stored voice pager.

Does anyone know what the Silent Answer Mode on a HT1550 does? I can't seem to find any information about it.

I have the HT1550 XLS as well and have been messing around with this feature to see if it will work. The only solution I could come up with is as follows;

1) The radio will decode the call and alert
2) When the carrier drops, the radio will TX a beep (if no TX message stored) and then display "waiting"
3) When carrier resumes, the display changes to "recording" and the message is recorded.

There is no 100% way to avoid the TX beep for ack sent back to the paging device. If you do not want you local dispatch center to hear it after every call you can fix this by simply setting the TX Freq. differently then the RX. This can be set to any random channel; (EX: a non-repeated local talkaround) that would not be monitored at all times. Unfourtnatly if you wanted to be able and TX on the channel from which you recieved the page you would be required to set a new Conv. Pers. w/ matching RX and TX.
