Over a period of time the power contacts on the bottom wear inward a bit, try taking a small jewelers driver , flat tip and bed the tip of the contacts out just a small bit being carefull not to bend them to much. It's usually better jsut to spend the 4 or 5 bucks and by a new set of battery contacts.
hope that helps

Also, if the two spanner nuts get backed off a fraction of a turn, the entire base plate can develop some play. It's usually not very apparent until you have the leverage of a battery on it, and it seems to have some play or "wiggle".
If there is play in the base plate, you will also see intermittent battery contact. When I have run into this, an 1/8 of a turn more torque on the spanners remedied it (I'm sure you probably read the recent sad tales of cracked base plates due to excessive torque).

I have found that another source of "battery wiggle" is some of the aftermarket (non-Motorola) batteries.
