Which of thr motorola radios will work for the following systems: Motorola type I, II, II smartnet, IIi and the Motorola II Astro Smartzone? Is the Astro smartzone digital? Thanks for the Help.

Well, there's a lot of 'em. I'll assume you want North American 800MHz trunking. I'll start the list, others can add to what I miss.

MTX800, MTX810, Mostar/Traxar, MX300T - all Type I only, as far as I know.

Just about every other trunking capable radio can be ordered or flashed to do Type I, II, or IIi. These include:

Maxtrac, MTX820, GTX (portable & mobile), MCS2000, MTX838/8000/MTS2000/Visar (all "Jedi" radios, basically), Spectra series, Saber series, XTS series.
This does not mean all of these radios will automatically do every type of trunking, it depends on their "feature set".

I've only ever seen the LCS/LTS2000 as Type II only, others may correct me.

I've only ever seen the STX as Type I only, again, others may correct me.

As far as SmartZone goes, the following radios are all capable of ANALOG SmartZone:

LCS/LTS2000, MCS/MTS2000, Spectra series, Saber series, XTS series.
Again, they need to have the proper feature set to be SmartZone capable. Of these radios, I believe only the LCS/LTS2000s are NOT capable of SmartZone OmniLink (operating seamlessly in multiple linked SmartZone systems)operation.

As far as ASTRO goes, only the Spectra series, Saber series & XTS series are currently capable of it. And yes, ASTRO, in any of it's flavors, means digital.

Below would probably mean that the system will be digital capable with most users on the type II Smartzone, am I correct?

I was thinking about starting off with an MTS2000, can anyone advise me if this would be a good one to start off with? Thanks again.

This is a new ASTRO Smartzone system being implemented in Palm Beach County for most of the public safety communications operations in the area. PBSO, Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Boynton Beach agencies will also be on this system.

The system will be APCO-25 digital capable with much of the public safety operations being digital, but PBSO and Fire are expected to be in analog mode.

** Site-1 , the primary Smartzone site for the system will be a 10 site simulcast system, and currently is in testing mode. It is excpted to roll-out in April for all Palm Beach County Units.
** Boca Raton's 10-channel 800-MHz conventional system has become trunked as a SmartZone Intellirepeater site-2.
** Delray Beach's 4-channel UHF-T system will be replaced with a 5-channel SmartZone site; they are building the tower now; callsign WPMU878
** Boynton Beach's 5-channel Type has become Type 2 as a SmartZone Intellirepeater

An MTS2000 will NOT work for your purpose. The MTS2000 is an excellent ANALOG radio that will suport all current trunking protocols assuming the correct flash. That system from the data you supplied will require an Astro capable radio (APCO-25, IMBE). Begin looking for an Astro Saber, XTS-3000, or XTS-3500. The nice thing about the high tier digital units is that they are entirely backward compatible with analog systems. Be prepared to drop close to $1500.00 for a used unit, and if this is something you will be using for public safety work (your may depend on it), buy a new one through your department (around $3200.00) on state contract.

I live in Boca Raton and can help you out.....Boynton, boca, and delray police and fire are all digital....PBSO, school board police, county parks, and county fire rescue are all 800 analog. You can still listen to PBSO on their VHF channels due to the fact that it is hard patched because the system is still in testing phase....Get yourself an ASTRO Saber II or III or XTS3000 or 3500 with the proper options (I can help you with that too.) Boca Boynton and delray are using analog for pub. works and parks, plus all of the water plants etc...they are on LTS2000's and LCS2000. You need a digital radio.
