I HAVE TRIED EVERY THING I CAN THINK OF TO GET THE MODE NAMES TO CHANGE WITH PROGRAMMING ON THE REAR HEAD OF A SPECTRA X9000. I HAVE SEVERAL AMBULANCES FOR THE COUNTY TO PROGRAM W/DUAL HEADS. SOME PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME THAT YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE REAR HEAD AND PUT IT WHERE THE FRONT HEAD IS AND THEN PROGRAM THE DATA INTO IT. THEN PUT IT BACK TO THE REAR. IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME IT WOULD BE GREAT. I REALLY NEED A STEP BY STEP PROCESS THANKS

First, make sure you have the dual control head option enabled in the RSS, from the main menu press F4, F2, F9, should be on the bottom left of the screen. Once enabled, program the main radio & front head the usual way, F3, F8, from the main menu. Then, choose the F9 "program rear control head" function on the programming screen, this will program the rear head. If you do not do this, it'll just show "Mode xx" instead of the channel name on the screen. Hope this helps.

THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION I AM NOT SURE ABOUT IT BEING TURNED ON OR NOT. IS IT COMMON TO HAVE THIS OPTION TURNED OFF AND IS IT DIFF. TO TURN ON ? HAVE YOU EVER HEARD THE WAY I DESCRIBED ABOUT CHANGING THE REAR TO THE FRONT. AGAIN THANKS

WAVETAR. MY PROGRAM DOES SHOW THE F9 OPTION ABOUT PROGRAMING THE REAR HEAD. DOES THIS MEAN THE OPTION IS TURNED ON

I've fought with this too... The question I have is how to connect the 2nd head. In order to program the radio and the main head, you have to disconnect the 2nd head to connect the programming cable. If you then disconnect the main head and plug in the second head to program it, the radio isn't on because the 2nd head doesn't have a power switch on it. Any further insight?

If it's a dual head capable Spectra, then simply enable it in the way I described earlier. You will not get the "F9" function in the programming screen unless you enable the dual head option. You do NOT need to switch heads around or anything like that. Just follow the steps, if you do not see the dual head feature under the F4, F2, F9 screen, then you will not be able to program the rear head. Since you are seeing the program rear head option, then all you should have to do is press it & it'll be done!

BOB: If you are using a programming cable which plugs into one of the control head connectors on the RF deck, I've never seen that. My programming cable is a DB-15 which plugs into the rear accessory jack, no need to disconnect any control heads.

Wavetar, I have done that ok with my own mid power Spectra. Where I come into the problems is with the high-power units that don't have the DB15.

There are also some low power units that have the dual db25 ports on the front that will only take programming from the front ports, and not the rear one.

I see, I've never run across one that didn't program from the rear accessory jack. In that case, give Motorola product support a call & ask how you're supposed to do a dual head from the front, make them earn their money for a change.

The high power Spectra has only 2 DB-25 connectors and the programming cable uses the center one.
Use the front location (cable) to program each control unit.
The rear control unit does have an power switch and generally it is fixed in the 'ON' postion.

As stated in earlier posts, F8 to program to radio codeplug and front control unit.

Move rear control unit to front cable.

F9 to program rear control unit.
The addressing for the position is stored in the head.

SO the only true solution to doing correct dual head programming in situations where you couldn't remove the actual rear head from its location is have a spare A9 Head cable with proper power to run for the rear control head. And, I'm guessing you'd have to have power from the same battery as the radio in this case.
