In looking through the model number decoding for the Maxtrac radios, I found the UHF radios come in low and high split (403-430 and 449-470). Which one would be prefferable to use for the 440 HAM band, if they can be used in the first place? Thanks.

The higher split. It should go down into the 430s. You probably will have to tweak out the VCOs a little (counterclockwise, I think). I have never seen how high the low split will go (they are rare, I have only seen one GM300 lowsplit)

I have used several of the Maxtrac/Radius/GM300 series radios for 6, 2 and 440. The UHF's are the easiest, as the previous post stated, you just need to adjust the SL (steering line) voltage with a VOM to keep the VCO's below about 7.5 or so. I have found a few that "touching up" or "fine tuning" the receiver coils will make them work better the lower you go in the Ham band. I have one at 436 and that's about the lowest they want to go with usable RX without modifications.
