I was wondering if anyone has made such a device. What I need is a 1-5 watt repeater that will fit in a small suitcase. We are going to be using it for survailance work. It will be picking up a vhf survailance mic in the 150-154 mhz range. The unit has to be capable of continous duty such as transmitting for up to 2 hours. I am going to be using a gel cell for power and a 1/4 wave antenna. It needs to be in the case for portability. I was considering a Motorola R1225 and turning down the power but, I think that the PA will still get hot.
Anyone have other suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

For that kind of use you could use a scanner and a 5watt handie talkie. you could set the hanie up for COS(carrier operated squelch). A local agency here uses the same setup and they have an old pager(the big kind) that has had it's guts replaced with a small transmitter.

I assume that for this work, you want the unit to transmit continuously and not sense a carrier, which could miss some important information.

I would use two portables. Most scanners don't have enough receive sensitivity and usualy offer no adj. freq. rejection.
Definitely use a small cooling fan from a Pentium or other processor chip to cool the transmitting radio. This can all be built into a small Rubbermaid style or similar case complete with a garden-tractor or gel battery. You could use any portable such as GP300, P110, Saber ($$$) or P1225 with an external antenna adapter and mount the antennas on the case. For the antennas, use a double female BNC "chassis feedthrough" through the case. One end of the BNC feeder goes to the radio. The outside end gets a BNC style antenna on it (2 required). These antennas won't require a ground plane like most other external type antennas, since they're from a portable.

I want to use a mobile duplexer so all I would need is 1 antenna. Most portables do not have a very high selectivity and therefore would more than likely desense if I used 2 antennas. A scanner would more than likley have even less selectivity.
As for the range-I need to cover about 1 mile on flat terain.
The survailance mic will be transmitting constantly so the receiver will cause the transmitter to be on also. I really don't know how well (even with cooling) a portable would hold up.
As for the battery I would like to use the highest capacity battery I could find that would fit in the case.
I know that there are units available out there on the market that I could purchase but, they are around $ 4000.00. I was hoping to avoid that cost factor and have the satisfaction of building my own for less money.
I will take a look at ebay to see what may be on the auction block.
Thanks for the help so far.
