At one time, I saw a program that would quickly display (in Hertz) the frequency of a tone fed into the sound card's input, such as QCII tones. Does anyone have this program or know of it?

There is a program by SteakSandwich software called Wintone 2.0

Its a bit dated but I think it is what you are looking for.

If you want to generate tones on your computer, you can use a program called NCH Swift Sound. You can generate tones on your QCII tones, save them to a wav file, then splice them together. I use this method to test my pagers.

he wants to READ tones, not gen them.

I've played with WinTone in the past, but couldn't get it to decode QCII tones. It did PL and DTMF great though. Was I missing something?

While not in the true spirit of the post, a MUCH easier way to do that is the following:

Run qbasic (from either within windows, or dos... you gotta find it first!) and use the following command:

sound([tone frequency],[duration])

Duration is in MS.

so:

sound(1039.8,150)
sound(569.1,200)

would be a "980" tone (might be off a little bit on the numbers). Run this, and it will generate the tones, setting off any pager that you happen to be testing (providing you hold the radio's mic up to the speaker the tones are coming out of...

Remember - don't test this on public service bands, or use a radio that will transmit into a dummy load as to not cause any trouble with your local public service organization... It does work, might require some minor tweeking of the above mentioned durations.

Am I the only one who can read here ?

didn't the original question ask how to
R E A D tones not generate them.
Something strange here. Now another answer on how to generate tone. Hmmmm.......

OK, look at MY FRIST LINE:
While not in the true spirit of the post, a MUCH easier way to do that is the following:
If one would READ the first line (granted i could have said while not in the true sprit of the origional post), you would see that I already acknoledged the fact that the other persons answer was not in the spirit of the question.

Not trying to start an argument, but simply defending my post.

I have the GVA signal generator. This program allows you to enter up to 3 frequenices and duration of each and plays them sequentially. This program is GREAT for generating tones because you don't need to splice them.

I need a decode program to "read" the tones.

ok Alex I re-read and see what you were trying to say. Answer to the other post
about generating. Seems like sometimes
folks dont really read and comprehend too
these days. Me included on that one.

I use a program called Cool Edit 96, you can take a .wav or simular file, highlight the individual tone and then use the frequency wavelength decoder and it will give you the tone's (hz). Any questions, feel free to email me.

 Don't worry about it. Have a good night (er... morning...)

Jim - sorry about going back and forth with someone in the middle of your topic  Hopefully you find the answer your looking for.

I agree with Chris L.

I use CoolEdit 96 anytime I want to decode QCII tones. Not only can you "see" the tone frequency, but you can also check the amplitude of each tone.

PS: If you try hard, you can still find a download of CoolEdit 96.

Don't bother with CoolEdit Pro/2000 or whatever they want 300 bucks for. Unless you are going to record a top-40 CD, you don't need it.

CoolEdit 96 will do the job just fine.

I was looking for a site to download Cool Edit96 and came up with this link, hopefully it will work for you guys who were interested in it. Thanks

While we're on the subject of tone decoding
anyone know of a self contained unit that would hook up to a scanner to decode QCII tones? (Something like what OptoElectronics makes to decode PL/DPL/DTMF codes).
Thanks !

I used Cool 96 decoder and it works well. I did, however, notice that some tones are off by 1 or 2 Hertz. This may be on my end or on the transmit end.

Speaking of sub-audiable pl tones. Anyone remember that Kenwood Portable model?(made about 4-5 years ago) It had a feature that displayed the (ham-repeater) pl on the display! Too bad I don't see many of them around? came in handy in vfo....

Most new Ham radios show pl tones.
Kenwood 733,Yeasu 2600 etc.

Now we need to come up with a Windows based program that will display/decode DTMF tones that are fed into the sound card!

Think I saw one on this forum! A day or two ago?
Could be on this post Page 1 ?

Wintone 2.02 will do just that. It will decode DTMF in real-time via soundcard input or through wav playback. It will also decode CTCSS tones.

Yea! thats it Chris! (thought it was here) but I get some error messages on Win98. Made for Win95/NT!.good thing I got an old tone reader, from Bob Grove (Grove Enterprises) several years ago! When he was making more products than books!
happy new year!!!

That error message is easily fixed in Win 98. I still use it. Go into your audio properties, and change your playback and record device to game compatible device. That error message will go away and you will be decoding.

If you need further assistance, private message me and I'll get you up and running.

I just got Wintine 2.02 working on DTMF. It took a little playing around with timing, but it works great!

Thanks all!

In WinTone, I can't get it to decode the CTCSS tones, what am I doing wrong here. I made sure I added the tones correctly. Keyed up, won't decode. I played w/ all settings, not working. DTMF works fine though. Thanks.
