I was wondering if all of you would give me some insight on some field capable bench test techniques that can be done with the mts2000. For instance I know about the test mode by the 5 button press on the nuisance delete button at start-up to reveal model, firmware, flashcode ect. Is there any other cool techniques that can be done on this hand-held to test other things or to reveal problems? Just was wondering what was all possible on this radio. Thanks=Andy

well...

Pressing the blue button then the orange button (once test mode is entered) will allow you to test all the switches/buttons on the radio, including the volume control. A numeric code will display on the screen, unique to each button/switch position. A beep will sound for each as well. The volume will display from 0-255. Otherwise, you need a service monitor to 'do' anything with test mode.

A quick test when doing a check out is measuring the transmit power.
At the LAPD radio shops some years ago the first test when a car came in for radio trouble was to have the officer key the transmitter, and the tech having reached into his pocket and pulled out his(or her) trusty Tijuana wattmeter!! and dangling it from one hand observed the brightness of the TJ wm's indicator. The TJ wattmeter was a 1/2 wave peice of insulated test lead wire with a #47 lamp in the center, one 1/4 lenth to the center and the other to the outside contact on the lamp held by one end of the wire.

True story.

You could also make up something simmular to do a quick check on the antenna and transmitter in the portable. They, (LAPD Radio shop) had a test fixture that the HT220 went into, and the TJ watmeeter was on the other end of a board to pick some transmit energy and lighiting the lamp if the HT was transmitting near spec. power.

Tijuana Wattmeter? I never heard it called that.

I never let a radio out the door until I test the antenna connector with the light bulb. On a portable, like the GP300 or P110, even if you are jacked in through the RF test port and read full power, with the antenna on you may not have any radiated. You can also run the bulb up the antenna while keyed and see the bulb gradually light up.

Any other full-time techs use this?
