I might be aquiring a Systems 9000 unit and cable for my Spectra. At Dayton, I aquired a DEK, and a cable, which has a standard Systems9000 head connector on one end (without ignition/speaker wires), and on the other end a plug that goes into the VIP port.

At any rate, How/if can I use this DEK with my spectra, and if I can't what's it used for.

DEK PN: TLN3042A
Cable PN: FKN-5801-A (about $57 apparently on accesspoint, but doesn't give a use).

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Alex

The standard DEK cable for the Systems 9000 control head has a microphone connector on one end, like this:

and a VIP connector at the other end, like this:

When hooking up a single DEK, the microphone type connector goes into the DEK and the VIP connector goes into the control head. This is a very short cable, about 12 inches or so.

I do not recognize your DEK part number or cable description.

I do know there are some DEK look alikes:
FRN1790, FRN1791 and FRN2010 are Smart-Status/Message (SSM) units. These are used with radios that do not support a Systems 9000 interface (i.e. Mocom 70, Mitrek, Maxar 80, Mostar, MaxTrac, MaraTrac, etc.). Externally they look like Systems 9000 DEK units, but, they are not. They use MDC-1200 protocol.

What you have is obviously different from the above example, but it makes the point that your TLN3042A may or may not be a Systems 9000 DEK. I would not find it very encouraging if your cable connectors do not at least look like the standard Systems 9000 DEK connectors above.

One way to know for sure is to get the Motorola DEK manual and compare its PC board layouts to the innards of your DEK. The part number is 68-80103W09 and it is $ 11.50 retail.

TLN3042A is an SSM expansion module.

FKN5801A is the cable that goes from an SSM head to the SSM expansion unit DEK.

Does anyone recognize the part number T5171C for a DEK head? These heads look the same as any other, are setup for Status, but the labels look from long ago. I'm curious if they're compatible with the Sys9000 heads.

Hrm. The investment I made in the DEK really isn't worth doing a ton of research into, however, I would be quite curious to know what it's purpose is for sure.

The cable I have has the a VIP -> S9000 Cable End on it, the one you find on the end of the spectra -> A9 head cable. Just no ignition sense, or anything like that.

This DEK does have the full Systems 9000 Conncetor (Mic, VIP, and Head) so I would think that's what it is ment for. I haven't heard of a Maxtrac having a DEK... Hmm...

", I would be quite curious to know what it's purpose is for sure. "

As posted above - its exact purpose is an SSM expansion DEK.

As posted by MIKE B - an SSM is a DEK look-alike device that adds MDC capability to non-MDC capable radios.

The SSM expansion DEK adds more buttons to that.
