Heard about the Aviation HT found in a hotel room near the WTC?

Here's the story: http://chicagotribune.com/news/local/ch ... news%2Dhed

Is there some law against having an aviation radio? What there something wrong about this? So long as you don't TX, I thought it was a right allowed and protected by the FCC. Perhaps I was wrong in my thinking.

If a boat has an accident, and I have a marine HT, does that mean I am instantly connected in someway?

According to the news, the suspect is of middle-east decent. What if they found the radio in the hotel room of a caucasion? Would it matter? Would it be in the news? Don't tell me racial profiling isn't happening.

No law in having/buying a marine/ham/avaition/ELT/radar/ radio...The law begins when you push the PTT & get caught! and, you don't have a license.. Don't forget the US is still on Full alert status! So some people are gonna tend to forget my comment above, to any degree!

A minor clarification- The individual in question wasn't arrested for having an aviation radio.
He was charged with making false statements to the FBI about having never seen or owned one, or even knowing what such a device was (Apparently after he served a stint as a communications technician in the Egyptian Air Force!).

For once and for all:

ARE WE AT WAR?

If we are at war, then martial law comes into play. I really don't like the thought of armed soliders with M-16's on the street corners. Nor losing many of my rights as a USA citizen.

WHICH COUNTRY ARE WE AT WAR WITH?

We can only be at war against a country.
We cannot be at war with a human issue.

For example, the military played little role in President Regan's "WAR" against drugs. But it was still called a "war." Basically, it was a war by the USA against the USA. Sounds silly when I put it that way, right?

Others in politics have declared war against poverty. Still more have declared war against inflation.

What I am getting at is this: We cannot declare war to an issue. Terrorism is an issue. "Crime" or "long lunch lines" or "huge long distance bills" could easily substituted for "terrorism."

We can only declare war against a geographic location.

The soapbox is vacent now, go for it.

He looks guilty to me! Any REAL american would not hide the fact he had a air radio, (or Marine, or one programmed with the local PDs etc), he would just explain why he had one...

If you guys would get the full story before ranting and raving it would save a lot of bandwidth.
The person that was arrested was an Egyptian student who was staying at the hotel near the WTC. He was arrested for lying to the FBI about the aviation radio. He was RELEASED this week because the real owner of the radio came to claim it. It turns out the real owner was a licensed pilot staying in the same room one floor above. Security of the hotel made an error and this student was behind bars for no reason. Let's get the facts before making accusations and rants please.
