I just bought what was advertised as a ribless programming cable for the HT 750, HT 1250 and GM 300 series of radios. Is this a posability... or to program an HT 750 or 1250 am I going to need a RIB and a new cable. Thanks for anyone who can lend me advice on RIB or RIBLESS.

Hmmm....

HT750/1250 do have a RIB-less programming cable, I think...I know they have a cloning cable that works radio -to- radio without a RIB.

On the other hand, a GM300 is a mobile; programs thru the mic plug on the front. This must be one helluva cable. Even if you meant to say GP300, it's a completely different animal from the waris radios.

Waris radios program from the side acc'y port. Cable end resembles a speaker mike connector. Is that what you got?

HI:

So long as you purchased a Factory Ribless Cable
for your radio, you should be OK !

However, not all clone cables can be
measured the same. Some good, some
horrible.

I am one that urges you to make SURE you
have a safe program platform, otherwise, its
is possible to turn your radio into a brick.

It looks like you may be new to the forum, and
you might go through the Search process, as this
has been covered many times.

If you have a spacific question regarding Rib
Boxes and Compatability, please feel free to
email me direct, and I will give you the stright
scoop.

This shows the Motorola rib less cable for the HT750, HT1250 etc. It has the RIB built in.

I was not designed to program the GM300, but perhaps could be modified to do so.

HI:

Although a Factory Ribless Cable has its merits, one
should consider a couple of things.

1. Service ( Unless you are very skillfull ) forget about repairing They are also a very sensitive cable, and does not do well
if abused.

2. No back-up Support Power / Ribless Cables get the power
from the computer.

3. The Cable is Pretty Much Unique to the Series of one
style of radio

BUT, they do have a small adavantage, if you do alot of field
programming, you only need ( 1 ) Cable.

If you chose the HT750 / 1250 / 1550 Basic Cable ( which
requires a Rib Box ) you get the advantage of the Cable
being repairable ( No electronic parts inside ) ,and with
a Rib Box, and appropriate cables, you can program
just about any " programmable " Motorola Radio !

Plus, the Rib Box is fully servicable too !

I have to agree with Monty on this one. I have an inate distrust of anything I can't fix myself (or at least make an attempt at fixing it!).

Actually, the RKN4075A Motorola RIB-less cable for the Waris models gets its power from the radio’s “Option B+” in the option connector. And the price is only about 50% higher than the standard programming cable.

Shouldn't there be a "china style" battery connector dangling out the side on some flimsy wires?

Basically, the HT750, 1250, 1550 is a Computer !

The Radio parts of it is a option.

Yes, and my computer radiates RF.

But the whole point is that the above pictured Motorola factory RIB less cable (RKN4075A) is very reliable as far as power is concerned because it uses the power from the to be programmed portable.
It doesn’t rely on any additional items like an external RIB and an external additional power source and / or battery and therefore is less likely cause problems.

Mechanically it is as rugged as the standard programming / test cable. The likelihood of it needing any repair is very slim because it is only used with the WARIS portable. The surface mount construction of the electronics in the DB25 shell is similar to the present Motorola RIB and radios.

It is compatible with the flash adapter for upgrading the WARIS firmware. There is room inside the shell to add a small switch and eliminate the need for the flash adapter if you like.

For a little over a $100.00 USD, its hard to beat.

Hi:

Just to add some additional info, and share
a few experiences I have encountered.

Both cables ( Ribless & Non-Ribless ) Cables
have their place.

However, I would have to share a opposing
view on the reliability of the Ribless cable.

For whatever reason, I have had to returned 2 of the
Rib-Less Style Cables brought into me for repair, only to be
replaced by Motorola ( they were still under warrantee )

Hence my point of view ( and may not be shared by others )

Abuse was my 1st assessment, and they truly do not like
being bounced around along with other programming
cables, adaptors , or other test equipment.

Its highly suggested, if you have a Rib-Less
Cable, keep it in a safe place when not in use,
preferably a Cable Bag, and do not subject it
to any physical abuse.

Speaking of the RKN4075 Rib-Less Cable
is a PROGRAMMING CABLE ONLY, and is a
ideal cable for just that purpose.

The RKN4075A is Usless if have a RLN4460 Test
Box, and if you need to make any soft pot
adjustments to the radio.

The RKN4074 is just a " Basic Cable " and has the Test
features in addition to having a more inexpensive cost.

The RKN4074A Program / Test Cable can take Far
More abuse and if the Standered Program / Test cable
ever gets damaged, almost anyone can fix them.

Cables ( or Ribs ) that have SMC components on them are
fine, so long as they do not get dropped or abused. If they
do " Replacement " is the only accepted solution.

And my point being is that its cheaper in the long run
to stick with " Serviceable Items " so when / if
it becomes necessary to fix, it can be done easily, and
by just about anyone.

If you have limited space, know how to take care of
a fairly expensive cable, and do not have a need for
"Testing " any parts of the portable, the Rib-Less Cable
is a ideal choice, otherwise consider the standered cable.

10 years from now, it still will be the same cable as it
was today.

Tech Tip:

With Motorola making so many d** cables these days,
I would urge those who have a number of them to get
" Bags " and keep them away from other cables.

Cables with Pogo pins are becomming a pain as they
can be bent very easily !
