Im looking at buying a saber 2 and it is missing the reference oscillator. What the heck is that? Once acquired, can it just be popped in or does it need to be sent out for tuning or what? Does anyone have one? Let me know, and thanks!

It would be strange that this would be your only problem with the unit. Robbing parts seems to indicate towards the possiblity of more issues.
As for your question, After installing, you will need to adjust (software) the operating frequency and the channel deviation (on a service monitor).

Not really that strange, these are CA govt surplus and to decommision them, they pull the oscillator instead oof messing with the codeplug, etc. Know where I can get one? Thanks

Check with your local Motorola dealer.
They can order one for you.

The part identifier is U301 and the Motorola P/N's prices are:

NXN6268A 16.8 MHz 5 PPM $126.00
&
NXN6269A 16.8 MHz 2 PPM $273.00

The latter 2 PPM P/N appears to be an option.

It would work as well but cost a tad more $$$.

Be careful installing this module as the are no guide pins and it can be installed backwards. Just verify the ground socket on the main board matches the case ground on the module. I have misinstalled this module before and if you don't realize it you will be pulling your hair out over it!

For those who read my earlier post about the square corner......disregard. This seems to vary from the secure model to the non-secure Saber. That is why I now use the above procedure for installation.

For some reason these are hard to come across used. I have one that is defective that came in a Saber 1E that I purchased. All frequencies were over 25 kHz off so the warp could not correct it.

Keep this in mind if buying a used Ref Osc. Module.

OK... guess what. I dont have a // dealer around for at least 200 miles. Who has one for sale on the board that will work in a VHF saber? Let me know, need this ASAP if possible. Thanks!
