I've got a remote-mount A5 Spectra that has these intermittent problems:
display losing some of its characters; pushing any buttons on display gets no response;
dimmer/backlight cycles through its settings.

Is this a bad head unit or a bad controller board on the main chassis.....? I'm wondering if getting a new head unit will fix the problem or is it something in the MLM? Any help is really appreciated guys.

It's either the display or the driver for the display, I would swap the driver first, you will need a Chipmaster to do that or just be real good with a hot air bonder. SG

It would be cheaper to go on eBay and get a new head

Did you try a different head or swap your head into a known good radio? That is what I do first on something like this.

A new display is 20 something dollars and a driver chip is around $8, or you can hop on ebay and buy someone else's junk "untested" spectra head. You could also just buy a new display board for $128, but your best bet is to try anotherhead to confirm your problems go away, since nothing in the radio drives the display, I am sure that will fix your problem. I guess that should've been another question....is there anything in the main chassis that drives the head display?... I'll see if I can find a new headf or it.Thanks.

I got a new A5 head, popped it on and everything's working good as new again! I thought the main chassis was screwy but I guess the head unit got fried somehow. Thanks to all who responded.
