Programing XTS5000 on a 9600 System
Have a few questions of getting a 5K to work on a 9600 system since what I have tried has not worked.
The concentric A/B switch is set to TX Inhibit so the radio will not affiliate/TX
The correct ID & WACN ID is being used
Correct TG's
Correct Digital Type: CQPSK
Correct Control Ch's
The radio see's the control ch with the signal strength & site #. No audio is being received & the radio does not even scan to a TG that is active.
What I noticed in the digital section for trunking system screen is I can not select Astro Capable System, but CAN select digital type IE: C4FM, CQPSK or WIDE.
The radio works fine on a 3600 baud digital system, no luck with 9600. In a 3600 baud system I can not select Astro Capable System but can select the digital modulation and it works perfect.
Could it be the RFSS ID is wrong in the Omnilink Screen or the Channel ID # in the 700/800 Astro 25 Control Ch screen? Or does this stuff have nothing to do with getting a radio working to listen?
I am using RSS 3.01.00
If anyone has any advise on how to get it working let me know on here or a PM.
Thanks in advance!

- What radios do you own?: APX4K, XTL5K, NX5200, NX700HK

First, try setting the modulation back to regular IMBE, not the narrow band version.
If it still isn't working then it's because the radio can't affiliate with the system and as a result it won't follow it, monitor it, or scan it.
If you let the radio affiliate, then it probably will receive just fine, but the radio will be unauthorized for the system- so it's got some big drawbacks.

Hi,
Been trying alot of different things with the same or no luck. Tried turning Smartzone on and off, Omnilink on and off, C4FM, CQPSK & Wide all with no luck.
The radio sees the system, gives me a site # and signal percentage which is all good. But no audio at all. I am thinking the radio is having the same problem as the Pro-96 scanners on a Phase 2 system? Although I would hope a 5K with 9600 would work on a Phase-2 system.
This radio does not affiliate and thats the last thing I want it to do. If thats the case then its time to buy a Pro-96.

It is/was my understanding that the XTS5000 (and newer similar XTS's), XTL5000, Astro Spectra Plus isn't capable of being used as a scanner. The reason is that there is no AMSS/WAC AMSS option.
Setting the radio up for Smartzone will have the radio automatically attempt to talk to the system no matter what buttons you have set to whatever. Once you change the channel to that trunked system, it starts to transmit. You may be able to set it to Smartnet with Affiliate on PTT, but I heard that M left out that option as well.

Yes, buy the scanner. The XTS5000 will not follow trunked systems unless it can affiliate. One of the 'improvements' Motorola made for that series over the XTS3000/ASIII.astrousa wrote:Hi,

Anytime the radio is set to Smartzone, there is no option not to affiliate. It will. You just may have an ID enetered that happens to work.
Older radios had the Affilate on PTT, but not the Astro line with current RSS/CPS.
Astro line will let you do that for Smartnet, AMSS, WAC AMSS but not Smartzone. Once you select smartzone, the option is unaccessable.

Hello,
I would never want to affiliate onto a system. By programming the top concentric switch to TX Inhibit prohibits the radio from affiliating or transmitting on a system & the red light does not flash when I switch to a system. Making an ID or coping one is not the way to go. If the radio will not work with what I have tried, I know it will not work - unless someone finds a way around it "without" affiliating onto a 9600 system. Based on what I have found on here & what I have tried it seems either an XTS3000 or the scanner is the way to go.
Thanks for everyones help!

The XTS5000 does work perfectly fine recieving only on a 3600 baud system with the settings set to Smartzone and the top switches to TX Inhibit. The red light does not flash and the radio "does not" affiliate. Checked it on a service monitor when turning it on or switching systems and nothing at all is being transmitted by the radio.
Using the "same above" settings but slecting Astro 25 options the radio just sits on the 9600 baud control ch showing the signal percentage & site #. When I do a site scan to switch Smartzone sites the radio goes to the other site displays the site # and signal percentage.

The 5000 doesnt try to affiliate while its on a 3660 or a 9600 system.
On a 3600 baud system the 5000 does Smartzone "Switch to the site its closest to or has the best reception from" BUT does not affiliate or switch sites unless one is stronger or I force it to with site scan. If the radio is set to site lock it stays on that control ch and displays Out of Range when it looses signal. In unlock mode the radio acts fine and does NOT affiliate or try to - best I can tell. If the radio is trying to affiliate - its not having any luck affiliating since TX in inhibited.
This is the safest way I have found for the radio to work. I am sure there are idiots who are using fake ID's or ID's they have found so the radio affiliates, thats the worst thing someone could do with these radios next to transmitting.
If a 9600 baud system requires affiliation then I will not do it. It means its time for a scanner instead of the Mot radio.
The reason I have not upgraded to a Spectra + is because of the affiliation issue. Guess the only way to go with a Spectra + using Smartzone would be to disable the TX on the RF board completely. My Specra is using Smartnet which works perfect and does not affiliate. The + would be nice with more ch's/tg's but not worth the problem of having the radio affiliate onto a system.

5K's and SmartZone
I have used the 5K for 3600 baud SZ systems with no affiliation. The final Fet has no power and the driver has been removed via a cap removal. NO RF output at all. The radio works fine monitoring the 3600 baud system in town on both digital and analog TG's.
Now that 9600 baud P-25 is another kettle of fish. It looks like I may have to go back to a 3K for that system. Scanners have yet to impress me montoring the P-25 system. I have yet to commit my cap/ex spending for scanners for work. It may still XTS series radios instead.

Assuming one wants to use a trunking radio transceiver to receive only talkgroups on a trunked system, there is no need to set the radio for "SmartZone" and you shouldn't. SmartZone is for working authorized units, and it does essentially two things: it automatically switches you from one "zone" to another "zone" as you move about (where "zone" here is the functional equivalent of a trunked "system," i.e., a combination of SysID and control channel(s)), and (b) it will temporarily "patch" traffic from another zone into a closer zone if needed. A receive only set should be set for "none" in the wide area and affiliation parameters, and each "zone" should be programmed as a separate "system" and "personality."

Any Motorola radio when programmed to receive and/or transmit on an APCO-25 trunked system (9600 CC) must be able to affiliate or it will not work. It has already been said in this thread multiple times. Hopefully you'll catch it this time.
Get yourself a PRO96 or wait till the APCO-25 Unidens comes out. For monitoring APCO-25 trunked systems the PRO96 is as good as it will get (once the CQPSK DSP upgrade comes out, it will be your best choice).
