Can any one offer any information on a cost effective way to allow two laptops to communicate over my departments UHF repeater system? Is there an easier way than getting into MDT equipment?? Any info is greatly appreciated..thanks in advance

Check your local Ham Radio store. Hams have been using packet for years. i 'm sure you can find something that would work.

Also keep in mind that heavy data traffic over a voice channel is quite anoying for voice users. Consider using a dedicated/backup/low traffic channel for this purpose, if possible.
Check with Metro121's directions, and if you need futher help gimme a call; I'm running on a MDT project with GPS support right now,
and I think I can help you.

I was doing that back in the middle 80's with my hometown dept. The admin. wanted voice to run on the same freq. certainly made the gawkers and nosy's lock our channel out. It worked great for awhile until the word "INNATTENTION" became an issue. The MDT's were then switched to another UHF channel and law and order were restored to the land.
