Chemical Methods to Remove Butyl Goo...

OK, here is the deal.

I need to remove butyl goo from some connectors. The person who weatherproofed the connector failed to put on the base layers of electrical tape, so now the butyl is stuck to the connector, and it's a mess.

Any chemical advice?

Or should I give up?

I would probably try MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone). You can get this from most hardware stores, and if you can't find a nice gallon jug of MEK for ten bucks, then you can pay about five and get a little pint can of PVC pipe cleaner, it's the same stuff. (Of course, the pvc cleaner has a nice little dauber thingy...)

Just make sure that you don't get the MEK on or inside coax or plastic connector parts. I'm not too sure how it would react to teflon (I think it doesn't), but I know it will eat away at PVC and such.

It'll get the connector clean, though!

Brake parts cleaner..from your local auto parts place. That stuff will take off almost ANYTHING if it does not eat what you are trying to clean!

My two bits worth:
My "Universal" solvent:
Lacquer thinner.
Lacquer thinner makes a great PC board cleaner, and will desolve many different types of glues, flux etc.
