I have a VHF JT1000 that I got off of eBay,
and it has a PTT problem.

The problem is that the side PTT button dosen't work, but a speaker-mic works fine.

All other side buttons work fine, and the
radio dosen't look badly trashed, although it
could have been recased.

The radio also didn't come with a label, and it looks like the serial number in the firmware has been altered (123ABC4567).
The barcode is intact, is there s/n data in there?

The story was that it was aquired from USG surplus, and was in this condition at the time.

any ideas? just a bad PTT switch? or is there some hidden function somwhere to disable internal PTT?

Yes, the serial of the radio is located within the barcode, however if the radio has been recased that frame could have come from any jedi radio.

The serial # is not all that important. If dosen't effect the functionality of the radio at all since the radio is not Flashport.

As far as the PTT goes, there are a few possibilites. The first and most likely is that someone remapped the keys in the radio. Put the radio is test mode and run a key check, hit the SB2 button 5 times. The PTT should function if it hasn't been remapped with lab. If that dosen't work, check the control flex on the RF shield, and if you have another jedi radio around, change the shield and flex out and see if that solves your problem. Lastly, you could have a limited controller failure in which case you can exchange the bad for new with the Motorola exchange program for 270.00 or just send the radio into the depot (not that you would want to send it in with a hacked serial#, you'll probably never see it again)
