PLEASE dont shoot me because I know this topic has been discussed- I found alot of talk about it doing a search but could not find a concrete answer- as I am not saavy about securenet: Will a standard (non secure) repeater pass securenet transmissions? ( Im really not retarded I just dont understand what would happen) Could somebody please explain what is meant by "transparent" repeater. Sorry in advance- J

A standard repeater will not pass Securenet encryption. I made, with the help of a few people, a secure repeater out of two secure Spectras. They both have to have secure boards with hybrids and have the same key as the radios that will be used with it.

The audio is received, decoded, sent to the TX radio and recoded before it's sent out, so the audio is degraded, but it works for what we need here. If you need a sceure repeater, go with a Micor. They can be had for cheap...

For the most part, if you were to key up and pass securenet audio through most repeaters it probably would not be decipherable on the other end. A lot of repeaters use audio filters and other things to clean up the audio so that when it comes out the other end it's a bit cleaner. You'll notice that talking to someone simplex doesn't have the same audio imperfections that some repeaters seem to add to the signal.

With this in mind, some radios can be setup to ignore their filters - or at least tune their filters to allow a certain bandwidth of audio pass through it. This will allow the recieving radio to get all the data it means to decipher securenet, or any other format (think IMBE).

The negitive side to this is that the radio will recieve a lot more crap over the air, and you probably can't easily put a PL on the radio and continue to have the desired effect - as that modifies the audio to add in the subaudiable tone.

I would probably say that most repeaters if not all will be unable to pass secure net. I'll add Reliably becuase you might get it to work sometimes, but with audio imperfections. Trial and error.

Also, the securenet signal is going to be digitally based, so you're going to need near DC - 5KHz bandwidth -- the "ham" standard for comparison would probably be a radio cut/modified to support 9600 BPS packet, audio tapped at the discriminator and fed directly into the modulator. I think it can be done, but you're gonna be running really flat through the repeater and your IDer can kill a transmission.
