Hi- I have frequenty observed Motorola radios that beep when the push to talk button is keyed. I was wondering if this is a function of the radio (programmable by RSS) or if it is a function of the trunked network that they are on.

It depends. If it is a long continous tone, then it is sending an MDC identifier before the user is allowed to speak. In order to do this you must have a radio capable of MDC. You'd want to set it up so that MDC Signaling is sent "PRE" as opposed to "POST".

If it is a set of beeps (maybe 7-10) that you hear very rapidly in succession, then that's probably to access a trunking system, or is a Nextel phone. (the systems are different, but the sound is the same if that helps you with a reference point).

Alex is correct. To expand a little bit, on the analog sabers you can still get the tone on the post ptt, and on the HT1250's, you can get a long tone, a short beep, or both depending on how its programmed. Also, you can set it not to beep at all with most.

Like everything else in the line up, every model will be differet.

that must mean that when I get my 1550 in the next day or two, I could get the programming changed so that it doesn't do a full side tone, just a "beep" when I can talk... ooh I like I like.

Maybe you encoutered the "Clear Mode Alert Tone" of an Secure capable radio.

Good point Keygun - I didn't consider that. What model radios have you seen doing this jcpman?

I'm guessing any secure capable radio would do that - the M100 that you have probably will not unless the radio itself supports MDC. IF it's got a 16 pin connector on the back then you might be able to do some hacking, put a new control head on it, and you might get a really nice radio out of that.

However, that's for someone who is experienced, and that isn't shy about making a brick while learning.

I'm also thinking that an M100 is a Radius/Maxtrac mobile, but I'm not 100% on that....

Alex- Thats right, the M100 is the a Maxtrac/Radius mobile- not sure if it is MDC compliant or not. I was just wondering if it was an option in RSS to make the radio beep on key or not- I have noticed this feature on several different trunked radio systems... when the portable or mobile is keyed, about 5 or 6 (maybe more) beeps occur.

Right - on a trucking system there is a certain time where a channel must be aquired, and some other stuff happens on the control channel - this takes time, and that's why you get the several beeps. You won't get the same sound on a conventional radio (though sometimes I wish - it's a nice sound). You can make a Full Signaling Maxtrac/GM300 give you a single beep after it sends an MDC Databurst, but I don't think that your radio has MDC in it...

There are hacks that you might be able to do to the radio - but i've never stated with a low tier radio, and don't know how far one could get with it.
