I recently found an R1801 suitcase programmer at work, but I haven’t found a manual for it. It has software version A, and 4k of RAM. I’d like to use it to program a Syntor, but I don’t want to fry it by hooking it up wrong….

The top half of the suitcase contains the “Reader/Programmer” unit, which has 4 connectors on it. One connector is a DB9 male on the end of a short cable. Does this plug into the DB9 labeled “Acc. Pwr.” on the bottom half main unit?

Also on the “Reader/Programmer” unit, there are two DB25 connectors labeled “J1” and “J2”. Do these connect to these connect to the “I/O1” and “I/O2” on the main unit with the two short ribbon cables?

The fourth connector on the “Reader/Programmer” is a BNC female labeled “Analog Output”. Does this need to be connected to the BNC “Analog Input” on the main unit?


When the unit is powered up, it asks for a program name. By trial and error guessing at the names, I’ve found two programs on it: SYNTORX and MX300-S. Both of these programs are “Version D”. Will the SYNTORX program work with an MCX100? If not, does anyone know the exact name of the MCX100 program? What about the names of other programs?

Is there anything else I should be aware of before I try to program a Syntor EEPROM?

I use the R1800 and if you type: L it will list the names of all the programs installed in the unit.

To do a dir command you type a L then return. The backslash is the same key as the L, except you use the shift key. You may have to do this a few times so you can right them all down. The two ribbons do plug from the J1 to I/O1, and J2 to I/O2. There is also a 9pin cable that is back behind the door which plugs into the accy power plug. Have not run any programs that require the analog out to be used. The MCX100 has three programs, MCX100F, MCX100SCAN, and MCX100PD. The last program does your PL/DPL code plugs. There is a later version of the PL/DPL which is MCX100PD1. The PROM adapter for the Syntor and MCX is a RTL5825A which does all the proms except the Syntor Multi PL Prom. The module PN is a RLN4122B. The Syntor programs are named SYNTORP1. and SYNTORF. The SYNTOR X memory module uses a RTL5815 module. Program name is SYNTORX. Hope this is enough info to get you started.
