Antenna Question

Post by sheonb »

I am pretty new to the radio world. I have a gm300 and I connected it to a roof mount antenna, the only thing is its hanging outside of my window and not connected to any metal. By not connecting it to metal do I lose reception?

Do you mean an automotive roof magnetic mount? Or a base style antenna? If it's a magmount with no metal underneath you will not have a ground... BAD!

Actually its just a plain roof mount antenna. It is not a magmount. It is the one you are supposed to drill a hole for.

What radios do you own?: Too many!

You are FRYING your radio if you're transmitting!

I hope you're not transmitting on it without the antenna grounded. That is a sure fire way to have an out of whack SWR and a burned up PA.

Either get a magnet mount antenna or dril a hole and mount the antenna properly.

That is a BIG 10-4. I have transmit on it for less than 1 min. I hope that doesnt mess it up to bad. I will return this antenna and get a magmount. Thanks

Remember you STILL need a groundplane equal to 1/2 wave diamiter to put your "mag mount" on, that is 15 in dia for UHF minimum. 36 for VHF.
