I say this on Ebay and I may be seeing things here, but it looks like a ribless pro series cable?? Anyone have any info on the cable?

From the description it say XTS2500 and XTS5000 only.
The 2500 and 5000 cables are ribless. The Moto cable will only program the 2500s and 5000s.
It is NOT for the Pro series radios.

Thanks George , I was refering to the connector on this one, it looks like the pro series connector on it. I was wondering if the pro series can be re-wired to work on an XTS5000?

yes, you are right. The radio connector doesn't look correct.

That is what it says it is. I know the seller personally.

O.K., I enlarged the pic and it looks like an XTS dust cover with the pins in it. I guess I'll have to investigate how to make one of theses since I guess the seller won't be revealing this information here on the board.

No, considering he's one of the only people that's figured out how to make them.... I doubt he'd be doing that anytime soon.

I will be dedicating a lot of time to this project and will report the results soon , I hope.

Two hundred dollars? Is your friend insane or just a scammer?
It looks to be built with all of 20 dollars worth of parts.

I'll rain on the guys parade, I WILL figure out how to make one even if I have to order an OEM cable to do it. Iteresting to note that the OEM cable is slightly more , like 40 bucks I think, and it's not a dust cover.

If he sees this thread, I'm sure he'll comment.
I personally don't care. Obviously, people are willing to pay the money since buying the cable from Motorola is $275 or so.

I'd spend the extra and buy the Motorola one, in this case.
If you've already spent the money for the radio, the extra 50 or whatever won't hurt you any. Plus it's Motorola OEM, which means no welfare dust covers. You'd think for the money this guy is asking, he'd at least use an OEM speaker-mid connector.
Didn't Monty post something about a regular Jedi programming cable being able to work with the XTS5000? I don't really see any reason this can't work unless the interface is completly different than any other Motorola radio out there.

no, the Jedi series cable/rib box WILL NOT work with the XTS2500/5000. It is a totally different communications bus.

RocketNJ is correct. The XTS2500/5000 use two different pins on the accessory connector labeled 'RS232+ & RS232-', as opposed to the data, busy & gnd lines in the Jedi series. There are no compatible outputs on the standard RIB, so simply rewiring the Jedi cable isn't going to work either.

So it seems to me that the XTS5000 takes RS232 data directly into it.
So what does the "RIB" inside the cable actually do? If the radio can take RS232 directly into it, in theory, you should be able to hook the radio directly to a com port and it'd work. So has anyone actually figured out what's inside a ribless cable? Sounds to me like smoke and mirrors (SmartRIB Flash-upgrades anyone??)

I talked to a guy at Motorola today who says it has what they call a "Smart chip" and it's unlike any of the other ribless cables. I have a factory cable on the way and plan to disect it. It can't be that diffucult to make , or I would think it's not diffucult since the guy on Ebay has made a few.

Not having the cable, not disecting the cable, nor being the one making said cable, I would wager to bet that their "smart" chip is just a MAX232...
"LOOK! A $0.01 chip that does the same thing a $200 rib does."
Oh wait, we've known that for how long now? (ok, maybe a couple more items to go with it.. but...)

Alex;
It isn't a MAX232. A MAX232 chip is a level converter (TTL to RS232). If there's already RS232 at the radio, you don't need to be converting any levels.
Unless, maybe, there's RS232 at the radio as well as TTL (BUS, Busy, etc...). That's a possibility as well.

Thanks Sherlock.
For someone who has never seen, programmed, or otherwise been in the presance of one, you sure seem to know a lot about them [xts5000's]. OH look! SARCASM!

Do you know me? No.
Do you know anything about me? No.
Do you listen to certain assholes on here that talk :o about me? Yes.
You wouldn't have the slighest clue what I've used, owned, programmed, fixed, etc..., so you can't make a judgement call unless you know the facts, and until you know the facts, keep it to yourself, or, as you are always so quick to point out...PM me.
ANYWAY.
It's common sense, what a MAX does that is. So I'd appreciate you cutting back on the smartass comments. I know you are an administrator on here, but I don't think that gives you the right to post comments like that which serve nothing else but disrupt other members on here.
Thank You.

Actually, supringly enough, I do know a lot about you.

Redundent question.

about me? Yes.
You know the funny thing about this one is? I keep getting information from several sources who take GREAT entertainment in your constant stupidity. The best thing is, they offer up proof to show this.
And yes.
I've seen the photo of you dressed up in a TTC outfit trying to look "cool".

As stated above, I do know the facts. Infact, you'll find me rarely posting stuff that doesn't have a factual basis. I think there's a lot of people on here who would attest to that.

As a admin, sure, I have certain things that I'm to do my best to uphold. Is it going slightly by the way side? You betcha.

I shouldn't even reply to this, but I will, just for you Alex.
Whoever you've been listening to on here (and I know damn well who you mean) obviously dosn't know me. There's two people on here that live in Toronto who take every chance they can get to badmouth me on here and other places, for what reason? I couldn't tell you. I wish I knew why, because they aren't exactly all-holy themselves.
Picture of me in a TTC uniform, eh? Yes, I've seen that picture. Have you ever met me in person? No, you haven't, so how do you if that's even me. It could be any Joe off the street for all you, or anyone on here knows.
Plow any streets, eh? Well, you might want to check your sources (MJ), because I'm certaintly not who you think I am.
-M
... and apolgies to the rest of the board...any further replies (from myself anyway), will be in PM.
