I'm trying without success to program several HT600s.. I'm using a RIB I built myself, that I have used countless other times without trouble. When I try to read a radio, I get a serial bus access error 011..

I've tried 2 different computers, Moslo'd both, no good. I tried the same setup, but read an MT1000 fine, MTS2000 fine, Maxtrac fine.. HT600.. no good. I've tried different software, switching COM ports, all without any luck. I've even tried 3 different HT600s..

Can someone please help!!??

Hi:

As most know, I am not a favorate fan
of Clone, or Homemade Rib Boxes, however
I am a bit biased unless one has excellent
construction abilities, and seems all the
other radios work, and so should your HT600
with the following exceptions:

1. You should be using a 386-486-25, Pentiums
are used at your own risk. I have repaired 1000's of radios with corrupted code plugs and I get sick with what mother ~//~ charges for a flat rate repair for 5 min worth of work in most cases. Upper end radios
Excluded...They are much more difficult to service.

1a. I reread your your post again, and I suspect amother problem since you have tried
more than one radio. TRY MAKING SURE your Rib
to Radio Cable is built properly. The other
examples still apply.

2. If your Cable is built properly, chances
are you may have a problem in the following
areas.

2a. Sometimes the " pins " on top of the radio become pitted, and the program cable
may not be making contact with the surface
properly. Use a # 2 erasure as that works very well. NO FILES, OR SANDPAPER !!

2b. Sometimes ( and I have seen this happen )
the " Pin " inside the universal contact becomes " Cracked " . Light pressure on the program shell during the read or test process may alow you to see this problem.

2c. Also, the " Contacts " from the Top of the radio many times will " break-away" from the mother PC board. That is a Easy Fix, but
you have to take the radio apart, and remove
the back shield to see the Ground, and the other two contacts. A poor ground causes all kinds of problems.

2d. Also, the main frame ground will sometimes breakaway, but that is a tough
area to address, and requires removal of the
entire PC Board to gain access toi that area.

2e. Slim chance, but if you are using SW from
a unknown source, you may have bad SW

2f. In the Set up Window in the RSS, there is
a " Test " feature to see if your computer is
communicating with the radio. Saves alot of time tring to read the radio over and over again. Your RSS manual should detail this for you.

So, in short, if your Other Radios USE COM 1.
make sure you have the same selection in the
HT600 RSS, and if that does not work, look at the Rib to Radio Cable, contacts, and the like.

That really should take care of 90% of the problems encontered with HT600's / P200's

No, actually I meant an MT1000... Which rules out the cable being bad.

Msisco knows of what he speaks... I've found even out-of-the-box gen-yoo-wine Motorola RIBs and RSS don't get along well with a Pentium or other CPU running over 90mHz. A lot of us have an old 2-386 holding down a shelf in the bedroom closet that will do a sterling job with RSS. I do all my amateur 2-6M/440/900 reprogramming at home with an IBM PS2-8525 I bought complete with manuals and original boot disk for $2.50 at an auction. Check your local thrift shops or yard sales... you're on your way to professional results on a hobbyist budget!

I had a radio that was (ostensibly) an HT600. Every time I tried to program it with HT600 RSS, I would get a serial buss error.

However, it would program just fine with the P200 RSS, leading me to suspect that someone had put an HT600 case on a P200. (It also appeared to have started life as a 2 channel model, and had been modified by a previous owner into a six channel version.)

Perhaps someone with a little more knowledge could shed some light on the differences between the two models and RSS versions.

I use a Pentuim 150 with the "Pentium version" HT600 RSS without any problem at all. In fact, I use one of Sandy's RIB boxes.
The early RSS had problems unless you ran it on a SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW processor. Mo'Slo in reality doesn't "fix" a fast computer. It may make software run slower, but the KERNAL and I/O's are still too fast.

Jim, did the fast HT600 RSS work on the P200's??? I always have to get out the OLD Toshiba 286 lugi-puter for P200, HT600, MT1000, R100, ect;!

I do not know. I never tried it. I'll try to get one of the few 200's from our FD and see if it will read.
