Motorola MTVA Install Help

Care to help an idiot out? Just recently i bought a Motorola MTVA to go along with my JT1000. But alas and alack when it arrived at my doorstep i realized, I have no idea what im doing. So believeing in my common sense to guide me i rushed out to find out if it was functional. I went and got one of those soderless cigarette lighter plugs from radio shack and a spool of 12 gauge hookup wire (the black cable on the wiring harness was cut to about 6 inches of wire). I used a crimp connector and patched the wire up and then proceeded to thred the bare ends thru the lighter socket plug. I plugged it in and discovered that the speaker dosnt work, nor does the cradle charge the radio. The mic works intermittently when i tap on the cradle. Im willing to bet that i fried up the logic unit (although im praying to god that i didnt). If anyone has any suggestions as to how i managed to break it, and what if anything i can do to fix it, i would be much obliged. Thanks in advance.

Are you powering the cradle through the control box? There're actually 2 modules you need - the control head, and the cradle.

Seriously, we need more info. Post a pic if you can showing what you have and what you did. THat'll go a long way towards rectifying the problem.

thaks for all your replies! there wasnt any smoke and it didnt smell like burning...ill take it all out of my car and post a picture of what it looks like. I have the control unit (NTN1322A), the cradle (NTN1340A), the mic (HMN1078A), the external speaker (HSN1000B), a power cable, interconnect cable, and speaker cable.

On the interconnecting cable that runs between the control unit and the cradle should be a yellow wire on the control unit side. This is the ignition sense lead. You need to pull power to it and fuse it at about 5 amps (this is what I fused mine at and had no problems with it). Also, look underneath the cradle and you will see two dip switches. Make sure they are both set towards the front of the cradle. Also, make sure you have the adjustable battery connector set correctly for your size battery on the cradle. Try it and see if that helps.

The dip switches are set toward the front and the battery contacts set properly. How do I do that bit with the yellow wire (i thought it might have been a grounding wire...)?

With the yellow wire, you want to pull power from the battery to an in-line fuse connector. Then you want to put a 5 amp fuse in it and out of the other side of the fuse connector, connect to the yellow wire. This should get it going.

Where does the yellow wire get hooked to? I understand the part about the inline fuse connector and having it pull power from the battery, but i dont understand where exactly the wire needs to go. Sorry, if im a bit slow on the uptake, this is my first self install.

One more thing...I would recommend a blade type fuse connector and not the glass fuse type. The off-chance the fuse should blow, it is easier to find the blade type fuses at most gas stations.

It should look like this when you are done.

Battery positive terminal-------->|5 amp fuse|--->---yellow wire--->----interconnect cable on control unit.

If you want or you can go through connecting to the ignition. Here's what I did with my JVA. I went from the battery to a rocker switch, then out of the rocker switch to the inline fuse connector, the from the fuse connecetor to the yellow wire. I installed the rocker switch on the console of my mustang so i could turn the power of manually and not have to mess with my ignition at all. By doing it that way, you can turn the power off to the ignition line on the JVA and still be able to pick up the mic and use it. This, of course, will turn off the charging of the radio and will allow you to cycle charges in the battery with out cooking it too fast (eventually that battery will be cooked and won't be any good for any long periods of time off the JVA) I would recommend using an NTN7143 battery or what ever your oldest battery is. Then keep a spare battery in you glove compartment with you. I would also recommend installing another rocker switch and inline fuse connector on the power running to the control unit. The control unit does not draw a whole lot of power when it is just sitting there, but if you don't crank your car every few days or so, you are gonna have a dead battery.

For now just connect the yellow wire to the red wire on the main power lead. At least it'll give you an idea if the thing works or not.

Actually ive just now finished hooking it up. I went and got an inline connector with a 5 amp blade fuse from radio shack and then connected that to my interior fuse box. i then used a crimp connector to connect it to the ignition sense wire and then everything else just sort of fell into place. I would like to thank everyone that responded my plea for help. This has been my first automotive install and everthing went great! All is working as it should be! Thanks alot everyone!
