Need advice on getting into the install business.

Thanks for any replies.

I have been unemployed for 2 years now as a former computer security engineer. Been doing this for like 10 years or so. No luck getting a job so far.

I have always been interested in installs of emergency equipment since I can remember. I've done some of this on my on vehicle for various jobs (vol FD, security, etc) through the years and have designed some consoles that I am quite proud of.

I am looking for a change and need advice on what I can do to get into the install arena. I have an electrical engineering/technician background and I work on my own vehicles. Studied auto repair in high school vocational school. Hate drive train repair and such but I love electrical so I am comfortable around install and repair work. I have installed my own /^\ radios, scanners, lights, etc and worked for Allen Telecom Group (Antenna Specialists) for 6 years as an RF technician.

I appreciate any responses and ideas.

Go find the local major installer and go work for them a while. Get some good experience without all the insurance and startup costs of doing it yourself

Show your stuff off to local police and fire depts.. I'm sure you'll have some volleys and officers ask you to do some installs for their vehicles.. it should take off from there.

What I was actually looking for was working for somebody to join already doing work. I have neither the resources or the inclination to start this up myself. I have done a few installs myself but I failed to get pictures before they left. Getting access is problematic at best.

I was looking at the prospect of an entry level position with a reputable, established installer. I have found that without recent experience, I can't even get an interview with anyone - and I have six years experience in the physical security industry alone.

If I do a career change, it might as well be something that I enjoy.

Joe, I drive through Larinburg on vacation. In fact, just did a few weeks ago. Looks like you have the kind of business I would like to have myself. I used to work for M, then moved on for more $$, working for a wireless carrier now. I used to train installers for the MSS's and did lots of them myself, engineered lots of solutions and new ideas for our shop and customers. I love this stuff. I also ran 2 MSS locations for about 5 years and did management as well as tech, and system design/imp work. Might have to stop and say hi next trip.
