I am on a seismic crew (oil exploration) using backpack mounted 45 watt radios for detonating our energy source, and the manual calls for base loaded half wave. 1st question is, if my antenna for 153 MHz is 44" is a 1/2 wave 22"? Next what's a loaded base? It goes on to say the BA must extend above the nut on top 5/16. I am doing my best to help secure America's oil independence, but could really use some good advice from any one who would not mind shareing their expertise. Thanks, MP

11803 / 153 = 77 inches for a full wavelength. 38.5" for a half. That includes a little cut room for tuning. All bases on 1/2 wave antennas will be loaded to some extent; it basically just means there's a coil in there. Another trick would be to use a 17" quarter wave with a piece of ground braid of equal or slightly longer hanging down.
