Hello-
Here in Phoenix, Az some of our Fire Engines have been updated with the newer style MDT's with the LCD screens. Temperatures here in the summer time can reach an incredible 115F-120F, not to mention the 10 degrees added to the inside of the car. I've had CD's and VHS Tapes melt (which weren't even in direct sunlight)....How is it that the screens and the MDTs themselves still function properly in this heat?

I've had to work with a laptop in a mobile service truck, and as long as direct sunlight didn't get on the screen, it never got hot enough to interfere with its operation. If direct summer sunlight (in Florida) got on it, the screen would go dark and you'd have to wait for it to cool off some before the display was usable. Nothing was damaged, but at a certain temperature the liquid crystal in the display becomes 'activated' for lack of a better term.

Should be no problem.

The Engines are sometimes in direct sunlight with the sun shining through the windows, why would the city put these new MDTs in the engines if there was a possibility that it would be unusable for a period of time while the MDT screen cooled off. I'd imagine it would take awhile to cool the large cab of a fire engine off as well, it gets REALLY hot inside vehicles here.

Just FYI, regarding the new MDT's

My town just switched to those. I think they are very cool, especially the "touch screen" option.

Just my opinion.

We are using Envoys and they are rated to 140 F. No problems here
