hi guys,

i need a model number for a charger, that can charge up nickel metal hydride batteries for my HT1000 & JT1000 SERIES...ANYONE KNOW IF MOTOROLA MAKES ONE AND IF SO WHAT IS THE MODEL NUMBER

I can't give you a model number but any NiCD charger will work fine with NiMH batteries.

NTN1171A is the model charger I am using for my JT1000 with a nickel metal hydride battery. Yes that is a Motorola Part. I would imagine it is still available.

Not all chargers can charge Nickel

Metalhydride batteries. NiMH are finicky batteries and the charger must recognize the the signs that the battery is charged.

For the HT-1000 Motorola has a RPX4747 Bi-Chemistry Intellicharger II and the NTN1168 Rapid Enhanced charger. The NTN1177 gang charger can also be used.

The NTN1174 overnight charger and NTN1171 single rapid chargers should NOT be used with NiMH batteries. The NTN1171 has been replaced by the RPX4747 Bi-Chemstry charger.

When I bought the JT1000 new that's what was shipped to me. A High Capacity Ni-MH with the NTN1171A. I get over a year of good use out of it. I even leave it on in the charger. I suppose there is always the potential for trouble though. Just figured I'd share my experience. I'd probably take perthcom's advice though, I am just going on what has worked well for me, not what the books say.

I have the 1171 charger for my JT1000 and it worked fine ,but now will not rapid charge my NiMH anymore for some reason.I would suggest getting the intelli-charger.The old charger still charges the nicad's.

The standard rate NTN1174A charger is OK per Motorola for both battery types. Only down side is that it is designed for a 1200ma battery at 16 hours, that is 110 ma charge current. On the high capacity batteries, it takes longer, about 19 to 24 hours. I made a slight change in mine to charge at 150 ma on the 1500 mahr batteries, HI CAP.

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, I was just going by what my Motorola info tells me for each charger.

Here is a quote directly from the Motorola site description of the WPNN4013 NiMH battery: "NiMH, 2000 mAh, 7.5V Battery (Only compatible with NTN1168 (Q224) & NTN1177 - NOT compatible with NTN1171 and NTN1174)"

And here is what it says about the NTN1174: "110 Volt Single Unit Slow Compact Charger (16 hours) (includes a compact standalone charger stand and a combination line cord/transformer/adapter) Not compatible with Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries."

While the battery would get a recharge from such a charger, as a dealer it would come back to haunt me and i'd soon be exchanging chargers and batteries out of my pocket!

Its like you can deduct anything you want from your income tax return.. till ya get caught!

Perthcom, looks like the big M is going to sell more batteries and chargers.
Our recomendations, as I stated here are from engineering evaluation and many tests. This is valid for the "slow" 1/10C chargers.

In the Jedi SLOW charger, a "Fat" battery requires 16 to 20 hrs in the slow charger.
There is a minor feild modification for the single rate charger to increase the charge curent to 150 miliamps (from 110 ma) for use with the Fat battery, 1500 MAH.

I use the NTN1171A to charge W+W NiMH batteries which are 2700 mAh.

The charger works fine. I've had no problems at all. The Batteries last a good three days.

I highly recommend these batteries to
anyone. They are simply the best!

I Have an NTN1177A, but it has a sticker on each bay that says to only charge NiCD's in it.

Does anyone know off hand the specs of the wall wart that is used with the NTN1174 slow charger. I am looking to buy a replacement power supply for it without paying /\/\ prices and need to know the following: volts, milliamps, polarity, and any other information you guys think is important to know. I am looking for 110v specs. I have one of those radio shack interchangable power supplies around here and maybe I'll use that if it matches the Motorola spec. I just don't have a motorola power supply in front of me to get the information myself.

12 to 16 volts DC at 200 ma should do it. Charger regulates the current to the battery depending on the battery capacity select pin, 120 to 150 MA.

Charger can be 'mod'ed' to provide up to 200 ma for hi capacity batteries.

I am presuming positive tip, is that correct?

Yes, positive tip, 1.1 mm size (size H at Radio Shack).

Oops! I shouldn.t have posted that from memory, apparently. The connector is 1.3 mm ID, 3.5 mm OD. Size H at the Shack was correct, though, and the catalog number is 274-1571. I've been to 5 stores now looking for them, and only two had any (note past tense). But you can order them from the web site.

This seems like a good place for the following...

In the course of accumulating various GTX and Jedi radios to play with, I ended up with a lot of chargers without power supplies. It escapes me how people can think those are less important, it's not like the charger is any good without the supply, but somehow the supplies seem to be what goes astray. Maybe they're behind the dryer with the missing socks. Anyway, I made up the following chart to take along to swap meets and surplus stores in search of substitute parts. For each charger it describes first the supply, and then the connector needed for it. Maybe someone else will find it useful too.
