I have a secure Vhf Saber 1 that I would like to upgrade to a secure saber 3. What parts do I need to buy inorder to do this ?

Hi:

Changing a Saber 1 into a Saber 3 is really
not all that hard ! Just a little Expensive
as one needs a "Saber lll Case Exteneded for
Secure Operation ) along with the Digital Front and associated hardware.

If you email me, I can give you a cost of the
parts so you can give it a try, or if you are
unfamilure with changing the model type in the RSS, I can do that and go through and give your radio a complete face lift and
restoration.

What is impoortant, is the " Interior" of the Radio be in Mint Condition and in the
range you desire.

In your original post you asked what parts are needed.

Of course there is a lot more to this than parts if you attempt this yourself.

You will need:

- Secure(long)Saber III case w/keypad.

- Front shield w/spkr,mic,& 8K (120 Channels) Display board. There is a 3 wire flex that goes from the Display board to the mic that should be included also that allows DTMF tones to be passed through.

- Flex ribbon cable to go from the 8K board to the main board.

-Possibly a new rubber boot for the reference oscillator to allow the new flex to pass through.

-I think maybe the Saber 1 has to be a "CN" version as well.

As Monty pointed out the radio needs to be capable of the proper range/bandsplit (internal modules,main board) to start with.

Of course you will need access to the usual programming equipment as well because the radio model # in the RSS will have to be changed. Also it has to recognize the new front panel and program the COPE on it.

When it is all said and done you will have a front shield spkr/assy and a Saber 1 case left over that you could possibly sell to offset your conversion costs.

An Alignment/Checkout of the radio would be a good idea especially if new frequencies and channels are involved.
