APCO25 compatibility?

Post by dal »

I have a customer that says his Federal grant terms require him to buy an APCO25 compatible repeater. Could this be a misunderstanding? He has no need for a digital system.
Does this mean Phase 1 compatible or Phase 2 compatible, ie C4FM or QBPSK modulation?
I have not seen the documents yet.
I need some enlightenment.

APCO25 compatibility?

Hello Dal,

I've been thinking about your post for almost a month now and assuming your end user is Public Safety part of APCO, they better get some information from the APCO association regarding P25 Standard ouestion. I believe the current C4FM was activated as of January 1, 2004 by the FCC and the QBPSK activates on January 1, 2006 by the FCC again but allows the customer 10 years to convert from conventional FM to the new Digital modes.

I have also heard that implementing the digital technology is being pushed out due to adjacent frequency compatibility issues. And then there's another scenario, "IF" your Public Safety customer is located in a very rural location only having a handful of squad cars, maybe 3 or 4, they have the option to remains on analog FM.

Boise, Idaho Public Safety Departments had a brand new Analog FM Simulcast system installed last year with the older Spectra-TAC Analog only comparators & it covers the City of Boise and the entire surrounding County. Boise is a fairly large city in itself besides the county too.

Not having a clue where your customer in located in the U.S. may have a bigger factor to why the matching Federal dollar requirements are written that way into the document.

Thanks Dan. I should have used the correct term, CQPSK. It is equivalent to C4FM at the sampling instant. So one receiver does both. Just like wowbagger said it would. (Those IFR guys are pretty smart, and make good stuff, but I prefer my GD analyzer.)

The customer is indeed a rural 6-car dept. So they will be running analog for the foreseeable future, although all that digital stuff will be sitting there in the dark keeping warm.

I suppose it makes sense for the Feds to make us all plan ahead and hopefully enhance interoperability.

I am in touch with EFJ, Daniels and MACOM.
