On the small desktop consoles, what would one need to get the unit to be functional... I remember with the old modcom consoles from way back we had them connected to mobiles... Is it that easy with the centracom series or is there much more needed?
MUCH more - The "small desktop consoles" are
the "Compact" consoles. They will require an
external DC power supply similar to what is
typically used with a Spectra and a speaker
tray on a desktop.
You will also need the most critical portion
of the system. The CEB (Central Electronics
Bank). This will require the circuit cards to
plug into the cardcage, as well as the power
supply for it.
Mandatory cards are an OMI/TOMI/COIM card
for the Compact operator position. A STM
(system timer module), as well as a BIM card
for each radio resource (base station) you
plan on controlling.
In addition, if you have a TOMI/COIM with
MDC aliases, you will need an RS-232 card
to upload EEPROM data into the TOMI/COIM.
If your CEB is a legacy CEB running 6809
OMI's, you can dispense with the need for
an RS-232 card (unless you want diagnostic
dumps). You will require a Shooter EPROM/PROM
programmer has well as the chip sets and a
spare OMI board (and a UV eraser or blank
chips) to program it.
If the host CEB is a more modern Elite LAN
driven system, and you are simply adding a
"Classic button and LEDS Compact" position,
you can upload changes to the Elite server
via the CDM, and the COIM for the respective
position will be configured without much
fuss.
If the host CEB is a pre Elite Centracom II+,
you will still need the FPP RSS, and the old
RS-232 board (and maybe the Shooter - it all
depends on the firmware vintage in the TOMI
card - later versions around Rev 13.xx.xx did
away with the need to burn new EPROMS by the
use of EEPROMS)
Without the CEB, if you manage to power up
your Compact Centracom Console, the only
thing you will see in the display is "LD..."
(meaning Link Down)...it does not see the
host CEB (hence no clock display, no button
functionality, etc).
So unless you have substantial spare funds
to invest in all the above pre-requisites,
all that console is, is a doorstop.
