ISO a Model Number or Name of a Motorola EMS Radiotelephone

Gentlemen,

I'm trying to find out the name or model number of a briefcase sized radiotelephone made by Motorola for paramedics operating in the field. The units that I have seen were white in color with a flip open style case which included a telephone handset, volume and channel controls and a small UHF antenna. I'm pretty sure there was some built in hardware used to interface EKG telemetry as well.

These units were probably made with the same electronics as the Motorola MX portable radio or MT500 (same vintage). I'm not sure if they were crystal controlled or synthesized with a EEPROM like the MX radio however, they did include the eight standard nationwide MED Channels as well as the two CALL channels (462.950 & 462.975).

Any help with a name and model number would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The APCOR series of units are no longer made.

However...take a look at this for those seeking paramedic comm's...

Is this what the model was called? "APCOR series"? I very sure the model I described is no longer made. As posted earlier, it looked to be made around the same time as the Motorola MX or MT500 portable radio (similar knobs, controls).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tim,
Take a look at http://home.att.net/~hearse/75ambequ.html . Scroll halfway down the page. In the left column there is a "white" Apcor radio. If this is the unit you are looking for, perhaps contacting the page owners would help.

EDIT - There is a service manual for this radio on eBAY:

I have the orange Lunchbox style Apcor in storage, if that's what you are looking for

Hey Martin. Thanks alot. That's exactly the unit I've been seeking but I never knew what it was called. I saw one for sale a few years back at a local hamfest and I kick myself now for not picking it up especially since the price was right.

Thanks again for the photo link. I'm going to keep searching around for one for my collection as well.

APCOR: Advanced Portable Coronary Observation Radio

Came in at least 2 versions: 12 (or) 15 watt unit "stand alone" version that was actually a portable repeater complete with duplexer as well as regular radiophone capability. Also produced was the 2 watt version (shorter) designed to be used with a Medcom vehicular repeater- this model relied solely on the vehicles repeater and was useless without it as opposed to the "high power" unit which did not use/need a vehicular repeater.

Both models were capable of sending ECG modulation to the receiving hospital either from a signal generated from an EKG unit OR directly from a patient ie: ecg cable/electrodes could be plugged into APCOR without the use of a ECG monitor (Paramedics could not see ECG but doctor could)

APCOR was based on the use of two MX radios complete with Sinclair mobile duplexer and ECG modulator. I recall both high/low power APCORs were capable of not only of full duplex operation but multiplex as well through the use of a notch filter--ECG could be sent during full duplex communication.

The 10 national "med channels" are still in use today-- the APCOR took further advantage of PLs' to facilitate use of several Paramedic units using possibly the same "med channels" in close proximity without "crossover" communications.

The white box APCOR was probably the most durable product (radio) ever made by Moto-- It would have made the venerable "rugged saber" look like a chincy piece of plastic. It was made of EXTREMELY thick (polycarbonate I think) plastic. I'm told by one of the older techs at the hospital I work for that back in the day the housing alone cost around $3000.00 and that was like 25 years ago!

It was a VERY sophisticated radio for its time and if you are fotunate enough to find one grab it! I have not yet tried it with mine because I ran short on information but I understand they make excellent ham repeaters with recrystalling and retuning of the duplexer (yes they are crystal controlled)

Anyway, thats probably more than you wanted to know about Apcors--- just one of my favorite vintage Motos. 8) (I'm the lucky owner of a new in box unit!) I wanted one when I was a kid watching " EMERGENCY!"

The 1 watt version worked with a vehicle mounted Micor Mobile repeater that had a aux receiver on 458.xxx mhz as well as the internal receiver on 468.xxx.

This allowed full duplex communication to the 1 watt apcor. The option for DTMF channel steering was also avaiable. Was late 70s early 80s tech but it worked.

Was bak in the days where Motorola offered SP products cause there was a need for them not how much it added to the bottom line.

I own an APCOR in pretty good shape in the UHF range that was used for Los Angeles County base contacts. When charged, that sucker still pics up the audio really well. Mine is identical to the picture on the hearse page in "spareparts" post.

Just found this post while researching APCOR stuff. My county operated ambulance service got one of those Olds rigs as a loaner, back in the "good old days." Took a bit of getting used to, as we were using much roomier GMC vans at the time, but that old bus sure could get up and go.
