MSF and the J2 connector and/or wildcard question???

On the instructions in the model specific page for interface of an external controller to the CXB msf they mention to isolate the audio connections with a 1:1 audio matching transformer.

Why is this needed, Can I try hooking up to the side of the unit w/o the transformer. I am not clear what function this transformer has.

Thanks, Rob

PS. I ordered the wildcard unit off of ebay...I am experimenting with interfacing the cat300dx controller. The model specific instructions seem pretty straight forward with the wild card..Is it that easy to interface with the wild card option, If so I will wait for it to come in the mail.

My two bits worth:
Why would one require a 1:1 matching transformer?
Basically for DC isolation between the devices.

There can often be very serious problems if there is a current flow between two peices of equipment.

The problems vary from a simple hum, to distruction of circuits.
On the PTT line, or carrier indicate one finds relays, or opto isolators.
Audio lines use transformers.

Both devices can have independent power supplies, and there is no problem if the ground potential should be different between chassis.

This is not of so much concern if the chassis are in the same case, or rack and share a common power supply.

Depending on the application, the existing transformers on the TTRC board could serve this purpose.
There is also an optional input/ output which is programmable for PTT, and carrier indicate functions.

Bernie,
Okay, you lost me....

So it would be easier to use the wildcard option for the interface?

The directions on the model specific page are not very descript in the exact detail of how to use the transformer..

Thanks, Rob

Also, I would assume that it is easier to interface to the wildcard---And that you don't need the audio transformer...

My two bits worth:
I really do not know what you are attempting to do, so I really can't give you a proper answer.

The TTRC board on the "digital" station has many of the functions of the wild card, which was most often found on the "analog" station.

I do not have a manual for the wild card, so I don't know how to option it.

I think that you really need some one to interface this device for you
that understands the MSF.

Even with much experience expermintation is often necessary, since things do not always work as intended.

FMROB,

Interfacing to the station is quite easy, especially using the Wildcard for logic type signals. Most any audio stuff can be done with only capacitor coupling to avoid bias conficts. If you have any questions about using the wildcard, send email seperately. I worked for 19 years at Moto in the design group doing mods to base stations including the MSF. Software and Hardware.
