I have a (misplaced) dream of somehow getting my Motorola R2008D to output audio while in spectrum analyzer mode.

It wouldn't have to be "calibrated" or even good audio, just enough to kinda tell what it is that you've latched onto.

Also, how close do you imagine the R2001D service manual is to the R2008D?

Anyone done anything with this?

I used to work at the Test Equipment Service Depot at Motorola. Audio in the spectrum analyzer requires a dual front end that the 2008 DOES NOT have (can't be done, sorry). The maint. manual (NLA) for the 2001D had all the info in it for all options depending on the vintage of the analyzer. There were actually two, one had a 5 pin DIN port just behind the side handle. This was the newer of the two (which we think should have been called the 2000E series). The info for the processor board and the option boards MIGHT not be in the manual. Again, it depends on when the manual was printed.

I sure agree with you on that. It never seemed to me that there were any operational differences between the A,B and C versions, but there are significant differences between the early D models and the later ones.

The later ones [with the 5 pin port] are much more desirable with added features such as screen printing [not the scope or spec an], DTMF encode & decode, cable fault location, and on screen menus for special function entry.

20 years after they were introduced and the 2001D is still an outstanding instrument.

When you say "all the options" you must mean the 'o1 options? The stuff (cellular) for my '08 is certainly not in the '01D manual I got.

I bought an R2001C/R2002C manual off ebay that seems to be vastly different. I got a copy of the R2001D manual (don't fell bad about this, I called Motorola FIRST!!) The copy, which seems to be the more accurate at this point, is 68P81069A63-0 (3/29/85) and the "C" manual is 68P81069A99-0, if that means anything to you.

Incidently, whichever manual turns out to be less helpful will probably be for sale.

Mine is acually an R2008d/HS, has the cellular buss connector on the rear.

I actually have not set down with the machine, and the two manuals, and done a page by page comparison yet, so I'm not exactly sure, after reading this, what all is or is not "in" mine.

Mine by the way, is in almost "like new" condition, may have bee refurbed or similar, and looks to have not EVER been in a service truck.

As much as I detest the "user friendly" nonsense, these are truely that way. I'm not a test equipment expert, but found it fairly easy to learn the basices of this thing.

My 2001D Service manual is a RLN7073A dated 4/30/89. It covers my 2008D/HS and the other D series like the one with trunking and secure.

No, not orange county, try the far north of Idaho, but I appreciate the offer. I haven't had time to sit down with the monitor and the book(s) and go through the differences, but I MAY try to cajole you into haveing a page or two photocopied, if you could.

I will be happy to copy limited info. The whole book is 3 inches thick.

In a former job I used a 2008C. There is a whole lot of changes betweed the D and earlier models. They did not get it right till the D.

The D logic boards are also different detween the 2001 and 2008.

My two bits worth:
Perhaps you need the "Operator's manual" for your options.
The service manual does not go into detailed operating instructions.

I think I have a copy of the cellular option manual.

The latest service manual does not have the schematics for the last version of the A-14 Processor board.
Fortunately, these boards are very reliable, and you likely never will have to repair them.

I have only had one processor board fail on a D, and I have been repairing them since they came out, with the help of DJP126.

Unless you have some sort of pecular problem, any D version manual should do for general repairs, and calibration.

Thanks, Bernie, that's good to know. I did go through part of the machine today, with the /2001D manual, and found that """most""" of the boards seem to match. There are at least two that seem peculiar to the '2008 at this point, the "jumper" board (A13) which I can figure out on sight, and another, A12, seems to be associated with the rear buss connection, and ""I hope"" is the main differance, says

94990 assy 01-P22120E001, and on the back, "84-P22121E001"

If that board is the main pretty much difference, and if it's pretty much associated with the un needed cellular stuff, then I'm fine.

And, almost forgot, I do have the proper operating manuals, one for the R2001D, and the one that also covers the R2008D /R2010D, so I'm ok there.

On the subject of Motorola Service Monitors (R2001D), does anyone know the AMP/Tyco part number for the DC plug? I know it was a CPC series but don't know the shel size, etc...

I don't know thw AMP number (never did), but the connector should still be available through Motorola. That connector was used in the R2000 series, the R2200/2400 series and is currently used in the R2600 series. Contact the service depot at 1-800-323-6967 for the p/n. It's been so long since I had this question asked, I don't remember the number anymore.

I believe the moto part number for the 4 pin dc jack is RPX4097A. This jack is black, plugged in only 1 way, outer ring 1/4 turn to lock it. Hope this helps

If you are in MI, just outside of Detroit on Ford Road there is an electronics and scanner shop that has these connectors. That's where I bought mine.

I also have the service manual for the R-2000 / R-2001 A series (68P81069A84-0) and Operations manual for the R-2001D (68P81069A66-B) in PDF format. I'll be happy to put these on a CD and mail them to anyone for $5.00 including postage.
