XTVA question from newbie

To all,

I don't know much about radio systems, but am being tasked to look into some radio options for our agency. We carry XTS 3000's (I don't know off the top of my head what firmware or freq). Some of our employees work with other agencies and use the other agencies XTS 3000's. I know that we can not program our 3000's to work on their network. I assume that they are UHF or VHF (which ever we are not).

Sorry to be so misinformed. My basic question is...will 3000's using different freqs (or UHF/VHF) work in one XTVA? ie. if I carry two radios, can I swap them in/out depending on what system I need to use?

Again, sorry for the dimwit question. If I find this out, I will know if I can continue to look into the XTVA.

Thanks.

The physical XTVA will work just fine regardless of the band of the portable. Where you might run into a problem is if you use power amplifiers with them. Also keep in mind that your antenna maybe a 1/4 wave UHF and sure as heck won't work very well on VHF.

If you don't use PA's and install a nice dual band antenna you should have no trouble using your XTS's regardless if they are VHF or UHF.

If you have/get PA's w/ your XTVA (power amplifiers) you can't just use any XTS in any XTVA (well, you can but it wont work that well and prolonged use will damage the radio.) Also the antenna on the trunk/roof will not be matched up to the particular band (unless you manually switch it each time you insert a different agency radio), also resulting in poor performance and RF being fed back into the radio, possibly frying the finals over time and not to mention instantaneously sounding like crap. Maybe you should look into no PA's with a MULTI-BAND antenna so then you can safely flip-flop radios from different agencies on the fly...maybe even that corny (albeit stealthy) license plate antenna could do the trick, they are multi band from what I read.
