I don't know what deal they made with the Devil, but I have noticed quite a bit of new Whelen installs for MTA, NYPD and NYSP.

I can attest to some Whelen in an Impala...was in Brooklyn last week when an unmarked came screaming by me with a single red talon going with the piercer tone...(oh, had corner strobes too, that was about it other than wigwags...)

NYPD, MTA, and NYSP all have different contracting vehicles.

The MTA has been a long time Whelen customer with Eastern Comm. in LIC doing their installs ( most of them).

The NYSP have been Federal customers but I think realize that Whelen makes better products for slick top vehicles. If you have seen a slick top NYSP car they are all decked out with Whelen LED gear and look very nice.

I haven't seen any NYPD cars with Whelen stuff but anything would be better than those Vision bars. The smart siren is nice for UC mounting and intergration purposes but that is about its only redeming quality.

Did McDermott loose the NYPD as a customer? I haven't seen any NYPD highway cars with the Whelen bars but I have seen them a neighbor of the cities car's and they look Nice!.

It is a shame that Whelen made the McDermott slightly better and took all that business away from a local NYC mom and pop operation.

Who has seen McDermott risers on vehicles outside of the NY metro area?

When I was down there over the weekend, all of the NYPD Highway cars I saw were Crown Vics. The Impalas were all being used as patrol vehicles. All of the Highway cars - even the newer CVs still had the McDermott risers on them.

I saw several NCPD and SCPD Highway cars with the Whelen risers. They looked OK while folded down. When up though, they weren't nearly as visible as the McDermotts. (Yes, I actually saw the two of them side by side. NCPD and NYPD were both at a crash on the LIE)

The MTA cars were all Whelen.

The NYSP slick-top cars are pretty much all Whelen. The NYSP cars with bars generally have either Street Hogs or Vistas. NYSP Troop E started phasing in Vistas about two years ago. (many of them had blue flashers to the rear too) They're also starting to phase out the Unitrol 480Ks. I'm not sure what they're moving to though. They also have mostly Orions in their cars.

Whelen, Fed Sig, Code 3, and Star/SVP are all on the NY State bid schedule.

As an aside...
I was walking up 53rd to the MoMA (The place is fricken awesome after the renovations) and saw a NYPD impala sitting up on the sidewalk. When I looked down at the car, I couldn't help but notice 'CRUZ 1' writting on the dirt on the driver side rear door. It was good for a chuckle.

Highway bars are the single ugliest thing seen on east coast squad cars

BLECH!

There's better lighting options out there

Last fall There were a boat load of MTA cars at Whelen for the installs. I posted a pic awhile back of it. I guess its all pricing, etc.

Whelen gets many fleet orders direct from Ford/Chevy and then they do their work, and load them back on the TT.

Hiway bars are interesting....to say the least...and big bucks. I will have to agree if you have a slightly loaded bar, it isn't worth the cost unless you load it up.

Going into Brooklyn last week, there was a NYPD Expediition that was all Whelen...but as anything in the city, I am sure they have a few different vehicles running around as test vehicles from different manufactures.

They also just let a big bid with Uni-Dynamics for sirens and PAs. In recent years, sirens and PAs have become commodities that the big agencies contract for strictly the lowest bidder, given they meet their specs.

Thanks guys.

We will be getting a Touchmaster for our new car, and wanted to know if those tones were in it, as you don't really hear them up here.

i can tell you for sure... NYPD only uses federal signal sirens ... either vision controller or ss2000 smart siren.... if you saw a black unmarked with a talon and whelen... it was probably hatzolah

NY is a strange place like that, NUMEROUS law enforcement agencies operating within the 5 Boros, need a score card to keep track and on top of it a lot of pretty ballsy buffs taking full advantage of the confusion. An unmarked in NYC ? Could be anybody !

Ya think?
Cruising around with a family member who is employed by a 3-letter agency. NYPD had just pulled a car, and the cop was starting to make his initial contact. She pulls up behind the cop car, approaches the vehicle and draws down on them. 5 minutes later, she gets back in the car, and we're on our way. The explanation I got was "One cop and three people in the car. Those aren't good odds on this side of town." Apparently, she and her coworkers will frequently just jump in and back up anyone in uniform if they don't have anything better to do.

Don't they have less after Gullani reorganized?

Money is the main reason they all have diffrent lightbars. If they wanted they problary all wanted slick lightbars, but LEDs are hell expensive compared to the Strobe or Rotary, and whelen problary make cheaper products, yet good.

but the thing is with the led bars they have almost a infinitive life span except for lenses

Well, Transit and Housing was merged into the PD so that's Two less. I can probably come up with close to 50 others when the State, Federal and other abstract agencies are added.
