I see that "Panter88" on eBay is constantly listing VHF 48ch XTS5000's for $310. Would this be a viable replacement for a HT1000 VHF? I see the price is pretty affordable.

As long as you don't mind a water damaged radio, with no tags, 123ABC1234 serial #, yeah, it would be a good deal, I wouldn't let my life depend on it though.

I just bought one of the 123ABC1234 XTS5000 model II's and it far out performs any portable I have ever owned but my chief complaint is the fact that it comes with zero features other than P25.

HT1000's generally support MDC encode, QCII decode, GE Star etc. You will get none of that with the xts5000 and there is no hope of upgrading it.

That's right, you need to flash upgrade it and you can't, at least not with that tagless factory serial # radio. Kinda makes a good deal look bad.

Someone on the Yahoo Groups "radioprogramming", claims to have sent in 6 of the Panter 88s XTS5000, they all came back upgraded and with depot S/Ns.

That's ********, all those radio's were sold for scrap and can be tracked by the ESN #.

$310 for a radio that retails in the thousands? Buyer beware.....

I always liked the HT-1000, once you got past the poor design of the antenna connector and the spring contacts on the housing.
