Thought I would let you all know that I finally resolved my problem concerning an inability to program a desktrac.
After consulting Batwing's WebSite to provide the pinouts and cabling for the programming cable I discovered that I had a wiring error in the programming cable.
Sometime back I had the RJ45 plug replaced as it had pulled away from the cable. The cable is an 8 lead flat cable (I don't know the designation) that is used for data networks. It seems that two of the conductors had were crossed in the cable somewhere and it just happens that one of these conductors was used in this connection.

The morale here is go by the color code and don't trust that the conductors will faithfully line up with the correct pin in the plug. Many Thanks to all that answered my appeal for help!
