A friend of mine has gone to work for a local taxi company. He took a picture of this speaker in the dispatch room, and he asked me how old is it?

Thanks,

My two bits worth:
Late 40's early 50's.

Send the picture to the Motorola museum.

Thanks, that is a good idea. I'll try to find an email address, or contact for someone at the museum.

It's neat to see that old gem still in service.

Awsome picture! I dig that speaker, but also check out what's to the right of it. The base of an old Dazor Floating Fixture microphone boom! Our dispatch microphone at the railroad (Rat Shack 33-2003) is supported by one of these! Do you know if the mic on the end of that one is an old Elvis style by Shure, or a newer one?

I have seen a lot of neat radios just tossed to the side in old train stations... I wish you could get radios today with the rounded chrome option!

What everyone seems to call an "Elvis" mic is actually a Shure model 55SH. I believe they still manufacture it, though the case is about 80% the size of the original.

I remember that very mic and speaker on the dispatch desk when my mother drove a cab and my grandmother was a dispatcher back in the mid 60s. I also remember them at some point having the desk mic shaped like the standard Ma M mobile mic on a stick.

Fun memories.

What sort of radio equipment is this speaker and mic connected to?

I just came across one of those at my ambulance corps while cleaning the radio cage out. Still works too!
