Hello,
I am looking for info on the Quantar A.K.A MSF5000 sam option board. I have a non SAM board equipped quantro that I want a sam board for the ability to turn the repeater on/off control through DTMF. (I assume you can do remote set-up/knockdown with the SAM??)

I realize that the SAM it has it's own software , but here are my questions

1)does it plug directly in, is it plug and play w/o extra stuff.
2)are the MSF and quant sam boards completely interchangeable?
3)does any one have part numbers or prices new on this equipment?
4)do I need to upgrade the station firmware or make any special provisions?

5) More importantly does anyone have this item used that they want to sell.. (I am sorry to ask that here, but I figure rather than start a whole new FS thread)... But I am mainly looking forsome info from someone who is familar with this item..

Thanks, Rob

Also,
An additional question. Can a RX amplifier be place in line with the quantro. I know some radios like a maxtrac or 1225 will overload the front end and sound like garbage???

Thanks, Rob

Did you know that IF the Quantar was not ordered with the Enhanced Wildcard you can go into the station's Hardware screen and Enable that parameter just like it's there? Just remember, you only have 4 I/Os on Connector J17 to use. Standard Wildcard is X233 and the True Enhanced Wildcard (8 I/Os 8 Wireline) is X157 options. When scripting the Wildcard parameters, you can program the standard Function Tones into the Wildcard fields to perform many other functions other than just Repeater Set-up and Knock Down. The one thing the Product Group did not do was to make the Quantar SAM compatible with Digital Astro signaling so it's strictly an Analog device. :(

I believe the Software for Quantar SAM RVN4111A order through AAD 1-800-422-4210.

OK, I am confused.

I don't know if I have a wild card. Just got the unit a day ago and havn't got into it yet.

Dan, What you are saying is that to set-up/knock down I just need a wild card option? So where does the SAM board play into it. Do I need both, or just one. All I really want to do is SU/KD. THe other interesting feature is to be able to limit the repeater operation with the validation of a MDC code??

Is the wild card option or board cheaper????

Please advise.. I am really trying to get a grasp on this. The service manual from what I can see has no info on these items.

Thanks, Rob

question is -

WILL THE SAM OPERATE IN A STATION PROGRAMMED AS MIXED MODE?

i understand it won't speak astro - as long as i can setup/kd the repeater with MDC or DTMF i am cool with that

Hello Rob,

To do the MDC decoding you will need the optional SAM which is housed in metal slide in module with DB9 programming port on the front panel.

Even if your Quantar station wasn't ordered with the X233 Basic Wildcard, it's built into the station's hardware and all you're required to do is go to the F2 Hardware screen and enable the field. Better yet, since that's incorporated you can enable the X157 Enhanced Wildcard which will provide more functions than the Basic Wildcard does not provide. But you must remember since you did not order the X157 option Enhanced Wildcard from the factory, you will not :( have the standard 8 wire I/O on Connector J17 on the rear panel of the Quantar, you will have only 4 wire I/O to the outside world IF needed.

Once you have SAM Module installed into the Quantar station and enabled through the F2 Hardware field, this will allow you to program the different screen fields which I think are F2, F5 & F7 in SAM. You will definitely need the regular SAM RSS, which I believe is RVN4111A and you must purchase the SAM RSS through AAD 1-800-422-4210.

Between the SAM module and the Enhanced Wildcard functions, you will have plenty of flexability with your Quantar station. As an example, you want DTMF codes to Set Up & Knock Down the repeat function, this can feature can be accomplished through Function Tones (FT) in Wildcard using a console connected via Telco wirelines. You must remember that the SAM module works on Analog only, it will not decode on Digital Astro signaling.

Any Wildcard functions that are programed into the Quantar's station software will function on either the Analog or Digital Astro signaling.

Hello Doug,

Regarding your question about Mixed Mode SAM operation. I would say YES as long as you're operating Analog for MDC and DTMF signal decoding.

I hope this has cleared up your questions on Quantar SAM and Wildcard features.
