DES-OFB question for AS3

it was my understanding that DES-OFB NTN8967A board was what was needed for DES encryption on a VHF VSELP AS3 in VSELP mode. i noticed it just P25. will this 8967 work for VSELP DES in VSELP mode? or is it just for P25 and im SOL in trying to find one for VSELP.

thanks,
wazz

from batlabs site reference.
Astro Saber

NTN1370B - DVP/DVP-XL
NTN13769D - DES-XL/DVP-XL
NTN8967A - DVP-XL/DES-OFB Project-25

damn good question.

i have no idea.

i know that VSELP was well on it's way out the door around the time OFB started showing up.

i dunno if it'll work or not

What about firmware revision? The 8967s I've seen are all R03.XX (usually around R03.53-R03.56). Late-revision UCMs aren't compatible with old firmware radios, which the VSELPs are by default.

Just my thoughts...

ok...so are you saying that if i find old revision boards between the range you indicate, they will work?

Not at all. I'm saying that the NTN8967 boards I've seen have all been in the R03.5X range. These boards are wonderful, but they WILL NOT work with older firmware (I believe you need R07 portable or R11 mobile). My guess is that the 8967s will all have new enough UCM firmware that they will not work in your VSELP radio.

I'd try to find the oldest (R01.XX) ECM you can in hopes that it will work.

Of course, I could be wrong. This is only a theory.

I have a des-xl emc 1.00 board if you want to try it.

there is a small chance that a board with EMC R2.xx will function in your radio - assuming you can find one.

the host/dsp comments are correct.

the higher the host/dsp, the higher your secure board firmware must be.

ok how about this...say that it doesnt look like im going to easily find what i origionally posted for.

would the DES board listed for the AS3 for analog mode work instead?
so it would not provide vselp encryption, but would do des in analog only?
or does that too require matching firmware? im thinking mine is old. i think my AS3 was made in 1995-6 and has not been upgraded. not sure what my firmware rev is.

i'm not going to search for it right now, busy...

but this has been hashed over several times.

des-xl will encrypt analog or VSELP/IMBE comms

Yep, Doug's right (no surprise there). I'd be hitting Seth up for that R01.00 DES-XL board if I were you...

ok i did some site searching to look fir the info, i found this thread

http://batboard.batlabs.com/viewtopic.p ... +vselp+des

this thread also states that DES-XL will work in astro mode. it was not 100% clear in my understanding that it was saying that you COULD run vselp digital encryption with the DES-XL module.

heres another issue, im interested in 2, for a pair of radios, i was hoping to find someone here on the board that had a pair they were willing to sell, AND have a DX keyloader that after i installed the boards that we could load a key (the radios had already been programmed for infinate key retention) and they were going to dayton and we could meet up to make the board purchase and keyload. thats a mouthful. :D
