XTL5000 Won't Transmit

Hi all,

I've got an XTL5000 operating on a simulcast Astro SmartZone system that won't transmit. I didn't program it, the county did, so there is a chance of a programming error on their part.

Anyway, the radio receives fine, and transmits fine on conventional channels - just won't work on the trunked system.

When keyed up, the TX light flashes for a second, but then I get the dreaded BONK sound instead of the channel grant tone - no error messages are shown on the display.

Could it be that the radio ID was never activated in the SmartZone controller, and the system is denying access because it thinks the radio is not valid? If this is the case, why would it not cause problems every time the radio affiliates on power up/mode change?

Thanks - I'll probably be taking it into the shop soon anyway, but just thought I'd ask here to see what it might be.

Sounds like the ID was never turned on or the ID was set as to not
allow the radio to transmit. If it flashes once it is a safe bet that it's the latter of the two. If the ID wasn't programmed in the the system typlicially the radio will usually make several attempts to affiliate and the LED will flash multiple times.

If the ID is not in the system it will still only try to affiliate once. The radio would receive a nack back from the system and stop trying to affiliate.

Not that I have seen. Here is an example of a radio that doesn't have the ID turned on in the system and programmed to affiliate. It usually does it 4 or 5 times every 2 seconds before it finally gives up.

So, the ID was not in the system at all or was disabled? The symptom you had was one flash on affiliation?

This is in line with what I've seen on SZ4.1 systems that a radio not in the system will only send one affiliation, not continuous.

I'm pretty sure the ID was not in the system at all, and that's why it was bonking.
