XTS5000 MDC PTT ID

Post by chiefhal3 »

Ok, I have pulled out what little hair I have and still can't seem to get my xts5000 to do MDC PTT ID. I have the box for PTT ID checked on the conventional personality I want it to ID on, I have the primary id set, I have the PTT ID set for Leading transmission, and on the menu on the radio I have MY turned on. Yet I still don't get the MDC ID when I key the mic. I am trying to do this similar to the way it is done on an HT1000 or MTS2000 on both of those type units I have no problem with this function and it works well.

Any suggestions?

There is a good chance your firmware is not new enough to support MDC.

We had units with HOST/DSP version 3.50.00 and they could not do MDC. They had to be upgraded to 4.00.00 in order for the MDC to function.

OK, I guess I need to look on my motorola online and see if I can find an upgrade to my firmware. I think I recall seeing some updates for XTL under the APCO 25 section but didn't see anything for XTS 5000, perhaps I need to look closer.

I don't think you will find it on MOL. You will probably have to order it through a direct account rep or possibly a large dealer.

Look for firmware refresh to run you about 100 bucks.

You will, in fact, need to order this through a full line dealer. The XTS is considered an "over-the-book" item in Motorola parlance. Smaller dealers do not broker sales in these kinds of products.

The order would be prepared from Motorola's electronic catalog, which is available to Motorola and its dealers only. It is not available online anywhere to the general public. Based upon your flashcode, your order would like like this:

Line item 1: T6996 Digital Conventional (your current software) $ 0.00
Line item 1a: G334 Upgrade Conventional (firmware refresh) $75.00
TOTAL $75.00

If you are a government agency, then you can likely order with a discount established by a purchase contract in your state. If not, then the list price stands and state and local taxes will apply.

Remember a couple of things. You will need to provide the model AND serial number for this upgrade. If your radio is legit, and not put together from parts, you will have no problem. If it is a parts radio then the serial number will not come up in their database and that could be an issue. the other things to remember is that if you utilize a dealer, make sure they have expeirence in this type of equipment. If not, shop for another dealer.

When you receive the upgrade you'll get printed instructions, a CD-ROM, and a flash key. The flash key has a 25-pin plug on it for a serial port on your computer. A SMART-RIB is not required and the upgrade can be effected with either XTS5000 prgraming cable (USB or serial).

You will need the latest version of ASTRO-25 Portable CPS. Remember, you'll be upgrading your radio to the newest available firmware and that will only be compatible with the latest CPS. To be clear, you will need the latest CPS to upgrade the radio AND to program it after upgrade.

As a an added bonus, the current firmware version is v6 and that contains a suite of features called TPS (Tactical Public Safety). It is a signaling scheme that allows P-25 signaling and analog voice to work together. In reality, it is actually a special suite of features that Motorola made for the the FDNY to go in their XTS3500 radios. That software was special to the FDNY on contract and is not in any other XTS3500 nor is it available in any catalog. However, the features were found to be very useful and now they are marketing them in all XTL5000 and XTS5000 radios that have at least v6 firmware being programmed with at least v6 CPS.

Good luck.
