I've had the FT-8900 quad band radio installed there for 2 years.
If I could have squeezed a 12" console in place of the 9"; it would
have been moved to the console.

The 8900 also serves as a cross-band repeater whenever the
occasion demands. 6 meter FM and 10 meter FM is also an option;
but I don't have any interest in 10 meters at all.

I can't use the drink holder. The alternate plan of attack is to mount
a drink holder to the dash. I purchased one at the local Wal-Mart
that is black and of a color that matches my interior. It is even keyed
for the screw and washer.

Even if I could have utilized the drink holder, I would not have used
it in fear of having spillage onto my radio gear. The drink holder will
be located adjacent to the console to negate this from happening.

I staggered the console because I did not want to forfeit my accessory
plug. I can comfortably use the plug for my phone charger, inverter,
Garmin 12-XL, Panasonic CF-27 laptop, and etc.

Take a look at this cup holder made for the Dodge trucks. It mounts inside the console and extends to the front of the console. Most people use flat head screws instead of the supplied velcro. It's called a "Cup Smoothie". Here's a pic.

No more leaning down to get your drink. It's right at you fingertips.

The pictures still come up as placeholders, nothing else. The page loads nice and fast, so there must be a problem with the pictures yet.

Darn!

I'm on a computer at work and they load up very quick with no problem.

At first I had a problem loading the page from work; but after I called home and had my son resize them, they loaded real quick with no problem.

After I get home late tonight, I'll do some more checking.

Is anyone else having problems loading the pictures?

Yup, nothing here either. Would like to see that if it's not a problem.

Finally, the pics work.

Good job with the console. I like it. But I agree, the ham rig on the dash - not good. Not to mention that rig needs some high SPF to stay cool.

Nice install. Pictures loading for me, as of 0700 on Monday.

I guess I should know what SPF is. But, I don't. What is SPF?

SPF == sun protection factor. It's the rating for sunscreen.

I'll be using your pics to convince a buddy of mine to go back to a console (04 dodge ram rumble B) in his new truck with dual ORION's.

I suggested the 9 inch Jotto-desk console, but he's all wrapped up over having 3rd passenger leg room in the jump seat.

Screw the passengers, radios are more important anyway!

As for the dashmounted ham rig...

If it was my install it would have gone on the side of the console. I would be somewhat concerned about the dash location in an accident. The fasteners could rip out of the dash material sending the radio into your head.

The Cup Smoothie would block my view of the 785 display and provide too much opportunity for spillage onto the radio gear. I'll pass on this.

The console in my truck is pretty much centered on top of the transmission hump.....and there is enough space to allow the center passenger to straddle the console.....granted it would not be comfortable for a long trip.....but it will accomodate a set of feet.

Nuts, pics. still won't load at my end. I in-dashed one Spectra head in my Ram and wanted to put in a 2nd.

I run an IC208 in my Outback, with the main chassis mounted to the sidewall/popout cover in the trunk area and the head mounted on the WINDSHIELD with one of those big stick-on suction cup thingies. It hardly is "in the way" at all, and the only thing you have to watch out for is when the head begins to shake it means the suction cup is about to let go, so you just wet it and reset it. Happens every couple of months or so. I have a picture I'll try to load of the thing later this week. Heat doesn't seem to bother the control head at all; I think the heat problems, when they occur, have mostly to do with final amp heat dissipation.
