In maintaining these all day long, replace that pencil eraser with a typewriter eraser, available at staples on special order, and then get a can of Deox-it electronic cleaner, as well as a can of Deox-it gold contact cleaner.
The pins on the universal contact port are made of an aluminum casing, GOLD pin and steel springs. Between the steel spring and aluminum casing, aluminum dust is formed and breaks electrical contact between the radio and port. Keep the spray to a light mist, little is better than ALOT. Spray the contacts first with the cleaner and work the contacts in and out with your finger, then wipe with a rag, spray a light mist of the gold cleaner on both the side contacts as well as the battery contacts.
Take the typewriter eraser and clean the side of your MTS contacts as well as the battery contacts on the back of the battery NOT TO FORGET the contacts on the inside of the battery that make conatct with the back of the radio, which are most important because they can be constantly moving with use and are made of similar metals which wear over time. I've seen some of the power pins on the radio wear divits into the battery contacts as they have been moving against them all day long.
Just to make sure, you have your battery selection set to the battery on your MTS, right? The slot on the side of the cradle marked with ( I ) ( II ) ( III ) The ( II ) is for the NTN1743 note the 43 in that, and the ( III ) is for the NTN1744 high cap battery. The two inner contacts on the battery make contact on the cradle so the brain on the converta-com can tell what temp the battery is and what size in Mah the battery is. Not having this right will not allow audio to pass.
Finally, for your speaker mic, give a shot of cleaner and gold cleaner on the pins for it, will help make sure the pins are clean as possible for better performance.
I don't have stock in the company that makes the cleaners, they just make everything work GOOD.

If the lights are out when you leave the station and then come on the second you key up, you know you have enough power.

Possible bad flex in the radio or a bad case on the radio. Seen both.

Kilgore: Smell that? You smell that?
Lance: What?
Kilgore: Napalm, son. Nothing in the world smells like that.
Kilgore: I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end...
