TELL ME THE STRAIGHT STORY......... PLEASE

This forum is dedicated to discussions pertaining specifically to the Motorola ASTRO line of radios (those that use VSELP/IMBE/AMBE), including using digital modulation, digital programming, FlashPort upgrades, etc. If you have general questions please use the General or Programming forums.

TELL ME THE STRAIGHT STORY......... PLEASE

Post by FMROB »

Okay, I am sorry to flame off like this, but after trying to read the numerous "converting an analog to astro spectra" threads I am becoming more fustrated and turned off. I wish it would all be consolidated to one thread. Any way I have some specific questions which I couldn't answer after reading almost every thread on this subject. Here goes, hopefully this will help all of us trying this.

This is what I have:
1) An analog 450-482 spectra.
2) A "Q" split 403-430 Astro spectra with an "W7" control head. "consolette radio"
3) A functioning, nicely flashed "R" split true astro spectra with a "W9" head that was last programmed with the latest version of CPS.
4) All required tools, and CPU stuff (you know what I mean)

This is what I want to do:
1) Take the, I guess you would call it "command board" and "VOCON" board out of the astro.
2) Remove the "comand board" and "MLM" out of the analog radio.
3) Install the "Astro command board" and vocon into the analog radio chasis. Leaving all of the analog RF components intact.
4) Intall the astro head and interconnect board on analog chasis that has the newer astro command board, vocon, interconnect, and astro head.
5) Do a full allignment.

Here are the problems I anticipate:
1) Hypothetically, A person would use mtsx lab to read an s-record from the known good working "R" split "W9" radio and dump it into the now hybrid "analostro" mobile with the "W7" Head, what will happen. Is there a software way to change the head style???

2) What will happen if the s-record is read of a cps radio, and written into a radio of unkown programing, may be dos or cps????

3) Finally, Am I plainly missing something. Is there any unforseen hardware and/or software problems. Do I need a "W9" head for the new creation?

P.S. I am sorry to make this sound so plain. People have been running in all directions on the other threads, so I felt that at least for my project that I needed to simplify the confusion. Hopefully this thread will produce some other useful answers for other users. Considering that neither of these radios are a"motorcycle radio, I would assume that there is no VCO injection line as stated in earlier posts, nor would any surface mount work need to be done.

Thanks, Rob

Also need to change the RF board from the Astro to Analog.

The radio will display and do everything a W9 would. You need an R split (450-482) Astro Spectra W7 srecord of the same power and control head.
D04RKH9PW7AN is your goal, or T04RKH9PW7AN if remote mount.

Doesn't matter... srecord is srecord is srecord.... the radio will only be able to be read and written to with the same CPS / RSS versioning issues. If you read the srecord from an Astro last programmed by CPS 4.whatever.. DOS won't work.

It may be easiest for you to get a W9, since you already have an srecord for the W9.

Depends on the age of your Astro Command and Astro RF board if you plan on using a UCM for encryption.. other than that, no SMT changes needed.

Good luck

Hello again,

Is there some one that could supply a "W7" 450-482 "IMBE" s record.

I have a nice "W9" nicely equipped s record to compare to... Thanks, Rob

PM me and I will gave you the e-mail address.
