Whelen AdvantEdge 4000

Today I went to look at a rescue with 2 72" long Whelen AdvantEdge 4000 lightbars... It is setup like this on front/back:

<HALOGEN-ROTATOR-ROTATOR-HALOGEN-ROTATOR-ROTATOR-HALOGEN>

Well they have replaced the halogen rotators a few times over the past few years, after a while they get stuck and look like royal crap.

They asked if it could be repaired cheaper than it could be totally replaced with strobe or LED...

So I was pondering...

Will the long strobe modules that are found in like the Edge's slid in the positions where the rotators are now?

I think as long as the sizes are the same it should work, no prob, but I want to make sure first. I guess if they dont fit then I could make new brackets for them.

If they are the same size, how economical would it be to remove the current rotators, and slide new strobes in, and run new strobe cable to a power supply?

Any ideas?

the Advatage is Differnt from the 900 in the fact that it does not have an "i" beam the top slides off with the lens and you can put in there alot of things just need to figure out how to mount it

i would think that it would be esier to fix the halogens. if it is a rotate (osclutate) problem it is usualy from road grime and/or condinsation from a poor seal that these lights are known for.

hints to fix.

look for the motors to have dirt or build up.
or
look at the ground/power for corrosion

this would most likely be the best bang for the buck.

any questions let me know.

Lightbar has been resealed once before and all new lenses and still the problem occurs. I just found enough of those rectangle strobes like thats in a edge for a really good price. And getting a power supply is no problem.

I have done some research and called many different departments and ambulance services that have used, or still use this model of lightbar and they all have the same problems...way too noisy and the osculators are stuck...

so, the truck will be dropped of mid next week when everything comes in, and we will figure out how to mount the strobes.

Thanks again!

The Advantage towards the end of its life did come with the rotator/internal strobe option. I am not up on the advantages as much as the strobe bar, so I am not sure if they have a couple of different lines for them.

The Advantedges were availabe as all rotator, all ocoliting, all strobe and some configurations mixed.

You may want to look at pages 29-32 on here: http://www.whelen.com/pb/automotive/Pri ... L051US.pdf

Worse case, call up Whelen at 860-526-9504 and they will tell you everything you need to know.

Nick,
Not knowing the pedigree of the rescue, would this impact the NFPA rating on the lighting package?

Chances are if he is playing with the Advantedge, the truck was placed in service prior to when those guidelines where released.

you said that power supply is no problem.. where can i get some cheep or repair the 2 that i have. and also i do not think that the strobes will not affect nfpa regs.

With a setup like that, I wouldn't worry. Either way, you have enough light coming out of that...strobe or rotator.

In fact, on my old Quantum, we had a simple code3 bar with 4 rotators (5th white), two front strobes. That met the specs.
